ROBERT PHILLIPS: REVIVALIST GOLD AND ENAMEL NECKLACE AND BROOCH SUITE, CIRCA 1870The necklace designed as a fringe of Tudor Rose drops, with red, white and yellow enamel, alternating with green enamelled foliate leaves, suspended from a fine triple mesh collar, the brooch of similar form, with five Tudor Roses upon a branch with foliate detailing, maker's marks for Robert Phillips, lengths: necklace 39.0cm, brooch 3.50cm cased, (2)Footnotes:Robert Phillips (1810-1881) was one of England's foremost jewellers working in the fashionable Revivalist style, with close links to both Castellani and Giuliano, the latter being employed by his firm. During the 19th century, copying and adapting motifs from antiquity and earlier historical periods became an important symbol of Nationalism for the wearer of the jewel, which in turn helped to create a national style. The design of this brooch and necklace exemplifies the Tudor Revival style that was unique to Britain. The motifs seen in similar jewels were often inspired by the tapestries and clothing depicted in the paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger (c.1497-1543). For the Victorians, the Holbein label embodied the romance of the entire Tudor dynasty and a quintessentially English aesthetic. In 1872, the Art-Journal praised Phillips's designs in the 'Holbeinesque' taste and described a series of Tudor rose jewels thus: 'Another rose in enamel has been copied from a document, to which is attached the sign manual of Henry VIII. The design is by Holbein, who, in commemoration of the union of the houses of York and Lancaster, has formed the flower of white and red leaves. This may be used as a brooch or pendant.' See Gere, C. and Rudoe, J. Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria, The British Museum Press, 2010, pp.331-353. In her book, The Art of Beauty (1878), the historian and chronicler of fashion, Mrs Haweis, described the 'artistic appreciation of good forms and good work' by Messrs Phillips of Cockspur Street, going on to recall, '.....the most perfect models are sought for the ornaments they furnish. Museums and picture galleries are ransacked for devices of necklaces, earrings and pendants. I there observed... a bracelet of enamel and gold whose delicate traceries with Tudor roses and fleur-de-lis, are adapted from a fine frieze beneath the tomb of Henry VII in Westminster Abbey...' An oak 'Kings Beast' carved figure. Tudor, circa 1530, wearing a studded collar and with the tail curling up the body, height 38.5cm. Mollie & Graham met in Wimbledon in 1978. He, a Cornishman, born in Gulval in 1930, acquired an early appreciation of art visiting Newlyn Gallery with his family. In his early career Graham worked in London writing for the Daily Express and he was responsible for one of the first Arts columns in a tabloid paper, but in 1960 he opened an antique shop in Chelsea. Inspired by trips to Italy, he displayed early furniture and antiquities in an uncluttered modern setting, a technique he later utilised in his own home. The Darks moved back to Cornwall in 1980 and at their home in Flushing, and later Truro, curated an impressive body of art and antiquities with a particular focus on Cornish artists such as Paul Feiler and Terry Frost, who both became close friends. The paintings were displayed alongside mid-century modern designer furniture by Eames, Bertoia and Magistretti, and arrangements of antiquities, thought of as ‘ensembles’ by Graham. Warm, charming, and generous hosts, they entertained their artistic circle of friends in their exquisitely arranged home, and it is a privilege for us to handle their beautiful possessions today. We hope to present them to you with as much care and consideration as the Darks used, and that those two remarkable connoisseurs would have approved.Graham Dark 1930-2015Mollie Dark 1928-2024 Please see the extra images of this majestic carving with its patina of centuries.

Steegman, A Survey of Portraits in Welsh Houses, Cardiff, 1957, vol. I, no. 1, p. 91 (as in the Cloisters, Christ's Hospital, Ruthin)R. Strong, Tudor and Jacobean Portraits, London, 1969, vol. I, p.128, under cat. no. 2414 (as untraced)Gabriel Goodman (1528-1601) was Dean of Westminster between 1561 and his death in 1601. He was born on 6 November 1528 at Exmewe House on Saint Peter's Square, Ruthin, Denbighshire, the second son of Edward Goodman (1476–1560), mercer, and Cicely (1493–1583), daughter of Edward Thelwall of Plas-y-ward, a member of the principal family of the Vale of Clwyd. After matriculating at Jesus College, Cambridge in 1546, Goodman became a fellow of Christ's College in 1552. By 1564 he gave his college as Saint John's and this second migration may have followed from his association with Sir William Cecil, from whom he had his employment. He became schoolmaster to Cecil's household at Wimbledon late in 1554, where he would have taught Cecil's elder and as yet only son, Thomas. Between Goodman and Cecil there was established a lifelong friendship. When Westminster Abbey was refounded as a collegiate church on 21 May 1560, Goodman was named one of the twelve canons, becoming Dean on 13 August 1561. In 1574 he built the new schoolhouse at Ruthin, from which the present school dates its origin and honours Goodman as founder. Having acquired the site of the former collegiate church in the town, he procured letters patent of 14 August 1590 to establish Christ's Hospital there. Goodman made an enduring contribution to Westminster School by granting the property at Chiswick held by virtue of his Saint Paul's prebend. In 1575 Goodman used his influence with Cecil (now Lord Burghley) to secure Westminster's right to send a quota of scholars to Christ Church, Oxford. He prompted Burghley to make a benefaction to the school in 1591. The city of Westminster was restructured by act of parliament in 1585, and Goodman became the first head of the new corporation (Burghley was its high steward).Goodman was buried in Saint Benedict's Chapel, Westminster Abbey, where his monument stands, and a painted wooden portrait bust forms part of his monument on the north chancel wall of Ruthin Church. A copy of the present work by George Perfect Harding is in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 2414- see literature), London, and was engraved in 1822 by Robert Graves. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
