Walter McGregor Robinson (1877-1956), a prime mover in the cycling boom which followed World War I, was known to thousands of readers of Cycling as ‘Wayfarer’ or simply as ‘Robbie’. Originally from Anfield, Liverpool, he worked for the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Co for over 45 years, moving to Birmingham in 1925 and retiring in 1937. He was wounded in the trenches during the Great War but refused to let his leg injury hamper his riding, whether it be in Cheshire, North Wales or further afield. Sir Alfred Frederick Bird, 1st Bt (1849-1922), Tudor Grange, Solihull; Conservative MP for Wolverhampton West, 1910-22; chemist and food manufacturer, proprietor of Alfred Bird & Sons, inventor of baking powder and the powdered custard that bears his name. A keen amateur cyclist from the age of 20, who set a record for the Land’s End to John O’Groats run, he became a director of Rudge Whitworth and was a founder member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland (later the RAC) in 1897; in 1904 he is recorded as owning no less than five cars, including a 24hp Mors. While attempting to cross Piccadilly at Hyde Park Corner on 7 February 1922, he was run over and died from his injuries. His son, Sir Robert Bland Bird (1876-1960), endowed a prize fund in his father’s memory to be given, with a medal, to ‘the inventor or producer of the greatest improvement in cycle design, construction, or equipment during any year’

Two 17th century cannonballs and a lead cannonball, thought to be late medieval or Tudor period. Note: the two 17th century cannonballs were discovered by Mr Ralph Butcher at Barnham Court, West Sussex, in the late 1980s. He was ditch-cleaning when his spade hit something hard and, on further exploration, he discovered a hoard of thirteen cannonballs, all of the same size. The owner of the property, Mr John Force, kept eleven of them and Ralph Butcher took two. It is thought that the balls were deposited during the English Civil War. All three cannonballs have since been passed to the current owners.

A Tudor or Stuart period lead-alloy 'hornbook' : incomplete rectangular plaque with small rectangular handle; bearing raised, moulded text on the obverse with hatched forms between four registers, which frame the letters of the alphabet 'ABCDE/FG[reversed]HIKL/MNOPq/RST[VW]XYZ'; low-relief octofoil in centre to the reverse. Exhibited at the Harwich Museum, Harwich, Essex, UK, 21st January-10th March 2025; accompanied by a copy of a photograph of the artefacts on display. 51 grams, 75 mm (3 in.). [No Reserve] Found Yorkshire, UK.The letter 'U' has been omitted from the alphabet as is common with such objects, as has the letter 'J', suggesting that the book was produced prior to the publication of Charles Butler's English Grammar (1633) which first distinguished between I and J. The letter Z is reversed. Hornbooks were employed as learning aids and commonly made from paper mounted onto wood together with a transparent sheet of horn. Smaller, more portable lead-alloy examples such as this one are generally believed to have been mass produced, whilst still falling within the genre of 'hornbooks'. Interestingly, some scholars have argued that the mistakes and inconsistencies found on lead examples rendered them less effective learning tools, used as children's toys in families with low levels of literacy, or possibly serving as dolls' accessories.

A Tudor bronze 'decade' ring, England, circa 1500, centring on a panel engraved with the letter S, to a band divided into ten segments, size M, accompanied by a catalogue card inscribed 'Dunwich 1858' and 'Spalding's Sale 1872'Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Dame Joan Evans (1893-1977)By repute, found at Dunwich, Suffolk, in 1858Decade rings are named for the ten notches of their bands. Used similarly to a rosary as an aid to prayer, a 'Hail Mary' (Ave Maria) prayer is said for each of the ten notches, and then an 'Our Father' (Paternoster) prayer is said for the main panel. The present panel is engraved with the letter 'S', possibly signifying the name of the bearer, or having a religious connotation, standing for 'servus', or 'Servant of Christ'. A similar ring is illustrated in Charles Oman, 'British Rings 800-1914', London, 1974, cat no. 72D, which references a 'similar ring from Dunwich...in the Evans Collection' in its footnote, and another (possibly the same ring) is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. 775-1871.
