A very rare whitewood paint decorated and labelled Tunbridge ware travelling inkwell, sander and box in the form of a cottage with retailer's label, the circular box base with black on white oval printed label 'Palmer and Sons, Pen Cutters, East Grinstead', below a circular cottage with door, bird cage, trellis pattern window and foliage unscrewing at the base to reveal a sander, the 'thatched' circular roof with open chimney allowing access to the glass inkwell below, 6.2cms dia. at base, 11.5cms high. ) Two photographs of trade cards for Palmer and Sons are in the Banks collection of Trade Cards (pamphlets) held by the British Museum, D.2.443 and D.2.454, where Palmer and Sons are recorded as 1800 - (fl.c). These are extensive advertisement for the business as well as poems relating to their wares, with extensive claim of British and Foreign Monarchs patronage, i.e. 'Pens The same as made for His Majesty's Private Use', Thomas Palmer, Post Master, Printer and Stationer, at East Grinstead, Sussex'. A rare penwork and mosaic Tunbridge ware box, of rectangular form, probably commemorating the Coronation of William IV, 1831, and attributed to George Wise, the front and sides in pen work, the former centred by a crown within leaf scrolls and geometric borders, the sides and back with panels of flowers, the lid centred by a mosaic panel of a butterfly within outer panels and borders of stick ware within a concave moulding with geometric pen work over trellis panels, raised on four rosewood bun feet, some decoration refreshed, the interior in old but later green velvet, the lock stamped 'GR', 23 x 17.8 x 13cms. Brian Austen wrote at some length on this box in his article 'Tunbridge Wares with Royal Connections', Furniture History Society Newsletter No. 198, May 2015, reprinted in our 23rd November 2022 catalogue. He suggests a connection between this box and another in Tunbridge Wells Museum which commemorates the Coronation of George IV, the pen work element on this box attributed to E. Connard, who worked for Wise. If the date of 1831 is accepted then the box would be the earliest dateable example of the 'new' tessellated Tunbridge ware known. George Wise who opened his new showroom at 11 Calverley Promenade in 1832 issued a handbill that stated he was 'Original Manufacturer of the Fashionable Mosaic and Inlaid Tunbridge Wares'. A rare Tunbridge ware Thames Tunnel rosewood sovereign ball, with six roundels, five executed in mosaic, one containing a gilt metal medallion commemorating 'The Thames Tunnel Opening 1842', with a view of the tunnel entrance, inner cylinder a little loose, 4cms dia. The Thames Tunnel was officially opened on the 25th March 1843 and became an instant tourist attraction receiving fifty thousand visitors on its opening day. Writing in 1852, William Allen Drew described the tunnel, 'The arches are lighted with gas burners that make it as bright as the sun; and the avenues are always crowded with a moving throng of men, women and children, examining the structure of the Tunnel, or inspecting the fancy wares, toys, etc., displayed by the arch-Pooking girls of these arches (….), it is impossible to pass through without purchasing some curiosity. Most of the articles are labelled 'Bought in the Thames Tunnel' - 'a present from the Thames Tunnel'. ) For a Tunbridge ware box with a circular printed label with a view of the Thames Tunnel encircled by the inscription '1300 feet long ….. opened 25th day of March 1843' see Bleasdales sale 24th November 2021, lot 85.
