[Abbey Scenery 204; B. Adams, London illustrated 1604-1851 (1983), no. 72, p.170-5], folio (405 x 300mm.), T. Bensley for T. Malton, 1792-[1801]Footnotes:ONE OF THE FIRST AND FINEST SERIES OF LONDON VIEWS - RARE HAND-COLOURED COPY IN A HANDSOME BAYNTUN RIVIERE BINDING.Thomas Malton (1748-1804) exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, and was principally known for his views of the capital's streets, squares and buildings. He also designed scenery for Covent Garden Theatre and ran a drawing school whose students included Turner and Girtin. The 100 meticulously observed views in the Picturesque Tour Through London were all composed, engraved and aquatinted by Malton, a remarkable endeavour at a time when the aquatint process was still in its infancy in England. The work represents the first large collection of aquatints of London, or anywhere else in the country, and includes views of Chelsea Hospital, Hyde Park, Grosvenor Square, Westminster Abbey, The Horse Guards, Charing Cross, St. Martin's in the Fields, The Adelphi, Covent Garden, Somerset House, St. Paul's, Mansion House, The Bank of England, Royal Exchange and Greenwich Hospital.'The Picturesque Tour is remarkable, if not unique, in that the 100 large plates of which it is composed were all engraved and aquatinted by the artist in person' (Bernard Adam). 'Like Horwood's Plan – and unlike works like Modern London or the Microcosm – Malton's book was pitched as a solo endeavour, a vision of the city produced by a man keen to establish his cultural credentials and capable of fine artistry, accurate perception, technological innovation and skilful composition... London looms in Malton in ways that most other contemporary illustrations fail to capture. The metropolis is not a threatening city in his works, but it is one that reaches up in great spires and vaulting arches, a place of proud ingenuity and soaring, untroubled magnificence' (Matthew Sangster, www.romanticlondon.org/maltons-picturesque-tour-intro/).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

John Glover, British 1767-1849- Gold Rill Beck, Ullswater; oil on canvas, 71.5 x 90.5 cm. Provenance: The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note: John Glover studied under William Payne (1755/60-c.1830) and began showcasing his oil paintings at the Royal Academy in 1795, where his works garnered positive attention, often being compared favourably to those of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). In his pursuit of innovative methods to depict light and atmosphere, Glover pioneered a technique involving a split brush for painting foliage, a style evident in the trees and landscape of this current work. The picturesque composition, the dappled treatment of the middle ground and rendering of foliage are all typical of Glover. Glover frequently visited the Lake District, embarking on sketching and painting tours to Cumberland and Westmoreland from 1793. The farm he rented at Blowick, along with the expanse of Ullswater and its winding tributary, Gold Rill Beck, are prominently featured in many of his paintings and drawings. An example depicting this landscape was exhibited with the Society of Painters in Water Colours (SPWC) in 1806. Glover is also known to have rendered this composition in watercolour; an example was presented at Bonhams Australia, 26 June 2019 (lot 76). Glover travelled to Australia in 1831, at the age of 64, becoming one of the most influential and celebrated landscape painters of the country. The attribution of the present work to John Glover was confirmed by the late David Hansen through private communication in November 2023.
William McAlpine, British, 19th century- Boats in stormy water, off the coast; oil on canvas laid down on board, bears indistinct signature with a later indistinct signature on top (lower right), 41 x 69.5 cm. (VAT charged on the hammer price). Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 11 May 1999, lot 260. Note: It is typical of McAlpine's loosely-painted seascapes, executed with a thick impasto which recalls the approach of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the inclusion of details such as one of the figures' red cap, and the barrel which floats to the left of the composition.
Albert Goodwin, RWS, British 1845-1932- Figures in an Alpine landscape; mixed media on paper, signed 'Albert Goodwin' (lower right), inscribed 'Under the Flitchorn [sic.] / Simplon' (lower left), 26.7 x 36.7 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Goodwin was a prominent landscape painter who worked principally in watercolours. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite approach of Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) and Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), under whom he studied. As well as producing a number of watercolours during his extensive travels, he was heavily inspired by the British landscape and returned to the subject repeatedly. Goodwin's paintings reveal the undeniable influence of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the artist's confident use of colour and light to produce works which are strikingly atmospheric. Goodwin produced a number of Alpine views, such as his depiction of the Jungfrau which sold at Duke's, Dorset, on 11 July 2024 (lot 109) for £900, and of the Rigi which sold at Christie's, London, on 10 June 2020 (lot 1), also for £900.
