AN INLAID LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO WITH ISLANDERS, EDOJapan, Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century Of rounded rectangular form, bearing a roiro ground finely decorated in gold, silver and brown takamaki-e and wood and coral takazogan to depict two south sea islanders, one holding a large branch of coral, the other seated atop an elephant and holding a small coral ball, the elephant rendered with fine details and inlaid tusk, the foreground with weathered rocks, the interiors of rich nashiji with gold fundame edges. Together with an inlaid lacquer ojime and a horn netsuke also carved as a South Sea islander, depicted seated as he holds a jar from which a choice piece of coral rises (now lost), his features neatly detailed, the mouth agape revealing teeth, with curly hair and clad only in a loincloth, the back with himotoshi.The interior with an old Japanese collection label.Condition: With surface wear and few tiny nicks here and there, some losses to the inlays and small cracks and chips to the interior. Overall, still presenting well. The netsuke with some age cracks, the ojime with some losses. Dimensions: Height 8 cm (the inro), and 3.8 cm (the netsuke)

A MASTERFUL WALRUS TUSK FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING A SWALLOW AMONGST FLOWERSUnsigned Japan, Osaka/Tokyo, late 19th centurySuperbly carved in relief to one side with a swallow flying above a chrysanthemum blossom amid bamboo stalks and smaller aster blooms, the other side with flowering peony and bamboo stalks, each side framed by scrolling clouds to the top and craggy rockwork to the base, the top carved with a diapered wave design and the base carved with a leaf. The swallow's visible eye is inlaid. The narwhal tusk netsuke carved with a foliate rim and small openings, the center fitted with a gold-inlaid shibuichi kanamono in the form of a flowering branch. The bone ojime carved in openwork with a floral design. HEIGHT 10.2 cm (the inro), LENGTH 6.2 cm (the netsuke), DIAMETER 1.6 cm (the ojime)Condition: Very good condition with three tiny chips to the edge of three leaves. Few natural age cracks.The overall quality of the inro strongly suggest the master carver Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892), or at the very least a close follower. Though rarely, Kaigyokusai was known to work in marine ivory and his inro usually featured floral décor carved in unparalleled relief. The artist of this superb inro clearly had a superior appreciation for this material, as the natural marbling and typical striations enhance the effect of the composition beautifully.Auction comparison:Compare to a closely related ivory inro by Kaigyokusai Masatsugu, with similar relief carving to the floral depiction, at Bonhams, The Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art Part II, 10 May 2011, London, lot 328 (sold for 24,000 GBP). Aesthetic movement walnut chair in a modern Gothic style, ca. 1875. Early Arts & Crafts walnut armchair with tusk tenon joinery. Likely produced by F.W. Group of two Cambodian silver betel nut boxes in the form of elephants. Their trunks are raised above their heads and they rest on bent legs. The larger box is marked along the underside "T90" (90%) silver.Provenance: From the Estate of C. Curtis "Curt" Dunnavan, Long Lake, Minnesota.C. Curtis "Curt" Dunnavan (1926-2022) was a passionate world traveler and avid collector. It was through his travels that he was inspired to begin a lifelong relationship with the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), becoming a major sponsor of the institute and facilitating the growth of their Asian art department, which is now one of the best in the country. His generous donations to Mia allowed them to establish a fund for the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, one of the few endowed positions of this type in the museum field. He additionally served as a trustee of the institute, advocating for its operational growth. In its turn, the museum established a gallery named in his honor in recognition for his endowment fund and numerous contributions to their collection. The selections here showcase his talent and breadth of collecting, ranging from ancient statues to 19th-century woodblock prints. His appreciation for art persisted throughout his life and we are honored to offer items from his collection in this auction.Larger elephant; height: 8 3/4 in x width: 10 1/2 in x depth: 5 in. Both items open and close easily. Light discoloration throughout both items as shown in the listing image. The bigger elephant has minute dents along the area where the lid and the body meets. Along the interior, there are several scattered areas with old polish; please see the listing image. There is a 1/4 in. minute crack to the back of the tail, which is only visible under careful inspection. The smaller elephant has minute dents along the area where the lid and the body meets. Along the interior, the surface is covered with old polish as shown in the listing. To the tip of the nose, there is green residue collected; along where the tusk and the face of the elephant meet, there is green residue adhered. To the side of the body, there is a minute loss. Both items do not have visible signs of restoration under UV light.
