G.A Rowlerson MC. Substantial and Interesting Collection of Ephemera, together with a number of mainly large photographs. Rowlerson was commissioned and gained an MC in WWI while serving with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment and he was captured in September 1918 on the Western Front. While there are a number of photographs of him in uniform in WWI and as a school cadet most of the detailed information on his MC and his capture are contained in copies of PRO and other records. The main body of the of the ephemera relates to his career with Indian Railways where he held senior positions. During World War Two as a civilian in India he received the Kaiser-i-Hind or "Golden Award" for services during the war and received it apparently from the Governor and there are many letters included congratulating him for receiving this hour in 1945. Other papers indicate he retired to Eastbourne. Interesting Collection worthy of further research.

(School photographs of him are also included) There are some very clear group and other photographs of him with his 7th Squadron fellow Pilots. A propaganda leaflet dropped over the German lines is also included as is an original Trench map for August 1916. Also present with its original is one of the best letters from the front we have seen written by Ross to a friend and dated May, 1915." We have been in the trenches for twelve days... just about played out.. the attack started at 5.am..I can't describe the Hell that raged all day with shells flying all the time.. expected to be blown to blazes any moment.. and are happy as kings now that we are having a rest... ". There are also a couple of framed items, head and shoulders of Ross in uniform and "scroll "commemorating his sacrifice. Sir Alfred Gilbert, A.R.A., R.A., M.V.O (British, 1854-1934): A rare and probably unique patinated and parcel gilt bronze 'double size' figure of St Georgeordered by John Charles Williams of Werrington Park, Launceston, Cornwall directly from the sculptor and probably cast by Broad & Son, circa 1895-6the figure with helmeted downcast head modelled in contrapposto and clad in elaborate armour with shell cast pauldrons and winged poleyns, one arm raised and with a slightly turned hand, the other arm down and outstretched, his straight sword with a corpus crucifix to the hilt (now lacking finial), on swirling base, raised on an ebonised shallow square plinth, the figure, 88cm high, 93cm high overall including wood plinth base Footnotes:ProvenanceJohn Charles (J.C.) Williams (1861-1939), Werrington Park, Launceston, Cornwall.Ordered by J.C. Williams in 1895 as apparently the first part of a commission for four double size figure replicas, St George being the first figure representing England, the others as the second part of the commission being saints representing Ireland, Scotland & Wales (these three figures apparently never realised).Thence by descent.John Charles Williams (1861-1939) of Caerhays Castle, St Austell, Cornwall was an English Liberal Unionist politician, collector and keen horticulturalist, noted for his philanthropic interests in botany.Affectionately known as 'J.C.', he was the second son of the miner, landowner and banker John Michael Williams (1813-1880) and Elisabeth Maria (d. 1884), of Caerhays Castle and was educated at Rugby School and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. The Williams family of Caerhays, Burncoose and Scorrier were prominent owners of mines and smelting works for several generations during the Cornish Industrial Revolution. In 1882 'J.C.' Williams acquired the estate of Werrington, an 18th century house with earlier origins (then in Devon, but since 1974 in Cornwall) as his home and set about furnishing with furniture and artworks, some possibly from an earlier dispersal sale of the original contents but the majority acquired himself from other sources following the fashions of the day. His own wealth combined with the fact that his elder brother Michael Williams took over running the family's business interests meant that he was able to devote time to collecting including amassing three major noted mineral collections and in particular his interests in breeding rhododendrons, camellias and daffodils amongst other plants. He married Mary Christian Williams (1861-1922), the second daughter of Sir Frederick Martin Williams, second baronet of Tregullow in 1884 and in that same year he returned to live at Caerhays Castle when his mother died. However, he remained Squire of Werrington Park even when he returned to his ancestral home as he reputedly enjoyed the good hunting on the Werrington estate and as such it is recorded that the he and his family lived partly at Caerhays and partly at Werrington in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Elected at the 1892 general election as the MP for Truro, he held the seat until he stood down at the 1895 general election and was also High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1888, and Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall from 1918–36.During the Great War Werrington was turned over to the Red Cross becoming Auxiliary Home Hospital Werrington and accepting injured troops from the frontlines in France and Belgium. Mrs Williams is recorded as being 'Officer in Charge and Organising Secretary' and the hospital treated 1128 patients between January 1915 and March 1919.John Charles and Mary Christian Williams had five sons and one daughter: The Honourable Charles Williams of Caerhays Castle, Conservative MP for Tavistock 1918-1922 and Torquay 1924-1955.John Francis Williams, killed in 1916 serving as Sub-Lieutenant of the St. George flotilla on the 'HMS Russell'.Alfred Martin Williams, CBE, Conservative MP for North Cornwall 1924-29.Robert Williams, killed in 1915 serving as Second Lieutenant of the 1st Guards Brigade, 2nd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards at the Battle of Loos.Peter Michael Williams, known as 'PM', High Sheriff of Cornwall, 1952.May Williams, who nursed her father after her mother's death. Alfred Gilbert's St George and The Duke of Clarence MemorialAlfred Gilberts depiction of St George can perhaps be described as the emblematic zenith of the New Sculpture movement. However its conception and realisation on what was perhaps Gilberts most prestigious commission of the his career, that of the tomb of the The Duke of Clarence in the Albert Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle was also the cause of much controversy.Ten years previously however, Gilberts accent to the position of England's premier sculptor had seemed a natural and inevitable progression following the death of his former master and sculptor to the Royal family, Joseph Edgar Boehm in 1890. His success was subsequently sealed with the most prestigious commission of the day from the bereaved Prince and Princess of Wales to design a tomb for their eldest son, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale who had tragically died from influenza on the 14th January 1892. Summoned three days after the funeral to discuss plans with the royal couple, Gilbert's preliminary sketch for the tomb of her grandson was approved by Queen Victorian on the 6th March 1892.Although the finished tomb itself was a tour de force of the sculptors art incorporating an effigy of the recumbent Prince in his Hussar uniform beneath the figure of a kneeling angel holding a heavenly crown realised in bronze, brass, aluminium and white & coloured marble, it was the extraordinary hybrid Gothic and late Victorian surrounding grill designed to pay homage to the tombs of Cardinal Wolsey / Henry VIII that led to the inception of the figure of St George. After seeing a monograph of the Wolsey / Henry VIII tomb prepared by the scholar Alfred Higgins and also seeing its inspiration which was the earlier tomb of Henry VII, Gilbert decided to emulate the use of such similar grills to these tombs incorporating twelve polychrome niche figures of saints into a fantastically elaborate design. The royal family were then consulted as to which saints should be represented. These were in order around the tomb, St George, The Virgin, St Elizabeth of Hungary, St Michael, St Margaret, St Patrick, St Catherine of Siena, St Edward the Confessor, St Hubert of Liege, St Ethelreda of Ely, St Nicholas of Myra and St Catherine of Egypt. Of these saints, St George is undoubtedly the most famous and was the first to be cast. Epitomizing the last traces of Pre-Raphaelitism merging into Art Nouveau but perhaps also idiosyncratically paying homage to the armour of French and German medieval tomb figures rather than those of the Italian Renaissance, the warrior saint is depicted as a sinuous long limbed effete youth clad in fantastical separately cast armour incorporating swirling shell motifs. The first figure of St George, cast in 'white metal' by George Broad & Son with carved ivory hands and face, was presented to the Prince and Princess of Wales. Delivered to Sandringham in November 1895 and intended as a private 'household' memorial to the Duke of Clarence it was subsequently installed in the Church of St Mary Magdalene at Sandringham. The second figure of St George, cast in aluminium, again by George Broad & Son with carved ivory hands and face was the model that was installed at the tomb. As the first of the twelve saints surrounding the tomb to be cast, it was unveiled by Queen Victoria and positioned in its niche in July 1898. Nevertheless at that moment in time, five figures of saints were still missing and it was not until 1928 that the tomb was actually finally completed, thirty six years after the o... He had a distinguished naval career and served as Hawke's flag-captain in the Royal George. Two years before he married in 1762 he inherited his brother's estate at Balnagown in Ross-shire, as a condition of which he changed his name to Ross. For a number of years he managed his estates, returning to sea to command the Shrewsbury in the Channel Fleet in 1777. The following year he inherited the family baronetcy and was made a Rear-Admiral soon after, subsequently being elevated to Vice-Admiral of the Blue in 1787.This painting appears to be the version of the Ross portrait painted for Lord Hyndford, possibly sold in the Sir William Bass sale at Berkeley Lodge in 1913 and subsequently at Christie's, London, September 29-30, 1977 (lot 88). LAWRENCE (T.E.)Three autograph letters signed ('T E Lawrence') to Lieutenant Colonel Sir Henry McMahon, regarding the commission of a portrait for inclusion in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, comprising: (i) Autograph letter signed ('T.E. Lawrence'), mentioning he '...wrote a yarn of the Arabian effort – in no sense a history, but a personal narrative. You figured in it, just a little, at the opening...', and is '...collecting illustrations for its eventual publication (no present intention that way, though sometimes I'm tempted to publish part of it)...', asking McMahon if he would sit for a portrait and suggesting '...a powerful young artist called Roberts. He's very young, very callow: like a hollow oyster: but draws wonderfully. He was a Cubist...', and apologising for the odd request ('...It's rather like head-hunting, & a thousand times worse than autographing: but I've made the same request to several other of my victims, & have got callous over it...'), and for his handwriting ('...I'm in a boy's camp, writing on a crazy bed!...'), 2 pages, 8vo (174 x 113mm.), 14 Barton St., S.W.1, 25 August [19]22(ii)Autograph letter signed ('T.E. Lawrence'), writing after the sitting to ask McMahon's opinion of the picture ('...The first writing to one newly drawn is like going to congratulate an oriental, when you don't know if it was a boy or a girl... It's very severe & structured, wickedly like you, wickedly unlike: technically of course nearly a great piece of work. Lady McMahon, if she saw it, is no doubt furious: yourself I expect are mildly amused: & your critical self is probably pleased. He's a very uncommon youth, that little oyster-artist, & will make a name for himself...'), and comments on Roberts' portrait of Robin Buxton ('...An astonishing thing, more modelled than yours, but less individual...'), 1 page, 4to (220 x 177mm.), [no place], 17 October [19]22(iii)Autograph letter signed ('T.E. Lawrence'), arranging to meet, 1 page, on Colonial Office embossed headed paper, 8vo (188 x 115mm.), Colonial Office, 3 March [19]22Footnotes:'I WROTE A YARN OF THE ARABIAN EFFORT – IN NO SENSE A HISTORY, BUT A PERSONAL NARRATIVE': LAWRENCE COMMISSIONS THE PORTRAITS FOR SEVEN PILLARS.To illustrate his 'yarn of the Arabian effort', Lawrence commissioned the 'uncommon youth, that little oyster-artist' Slade-trained William Roberts, a self-described 'English Cubist' who had spent the war as firstly a gunner at the front and latterly as an official war artist. He was also to undertake an oil painting of Lawrence wearing his RAF uniform, the sittings taking place 'in a room I was using at Coleherne Terrace, Earl's Court' (Roberts' memoir Early Years).Roberts was a very suitable choice. The powerful personalities Lawrence depicts in his book demanded a powerful artistic style such as Roberts could offer, and Lawrence described McMahon's portrait as 'absolutely splendid: the strength of it, and the life: it feels as though at any moment there might be a crash in the paper and the thing start out' (21 October 1922) (quoted in www.englishcubist.co.uk/mcmahon). What McMahon thought of it is not known, neither seemingly is the current whereabouts of the original, but Lawrence notes with wry humour that McMahon's wife would be less than impressed with the depiction. The portrait was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1927 as item 1 in a selling exhibition of illustrations from the book. In the preface to the exhibition catalogue, Bernard Shaw explains how Lawrence '...made up his mind to lose money... He set able painters to work to make portraits... and imaginative draughtsmen... He had paper specially made, and directed the printing himself in the manner of Morris or Caxton...' and urges people to purchase the pictures for 'extravagant sums' to benefit a Trust set up to firstly cover the costs of publication and thereafter benefit 'a fund for the relief of the Belisariuses of the Air Force. Not one farthing of the price of Arabia's independence and her timely aid to England will ever go into the pockets of the Prince of Damascus...' (Catalogue of an Exhibition of Paintings, Pastels, Drawings and Woodcuts illustrating Col. T.E. Lawrence's book 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', The Leicester Galleries, 5 to 21 February 1927).Sir Henry McMahon, first high commissioner for Egypt, is perhaps best known for the McMahon-Hussein correspondence, a secret correspondence with the sharif of Mecca on behalf of the British government encouraging an Arab uprising against the sultan-caliph. He is described by Sir Ronald Storrs (his papers sold in these rooms 26 June 2019, lot 223) as ''slight, fair very young for 52, quiet, friendly, agreeable, considerate and cautious'' but quite out of his depth, lacking 'any knowledge of Arabic... forced to deal with a complex political situation... In return for an Arab rebellion McMahon loosely promised independence in certain areas of the Middle East, but he failed precisely to stipulate which parts... The extreme vagueness of the often confused and ambiguous correspondence between McMahon and Hussein... caused almost immediate controversy between the Arabs and the British empire over its differing interpretations, especially about whether it included Palestine...' (T.R. Moreman, ODNB), thus sowing the seeds of discord for years to come. In Seven Pillars, however, Lawrence praised McMahon's 'shrewd insight and tried, experienced mind' and his success in having 'achieved our foundation stone, the understanding with the Sherif of Mecca', writing that McMahon was kept in the dark about the British government's real intentions and was not to blame. Lawrence's guilt over his own part in what he saw as a British and French betrayal of the Arabs was to haunt him for the rest of his life. This correspondence is unpublished and has remained in the McMahon family until now.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

NEUVILLE (ALPHONSE DE)Portrait of John Chard V.C., head and shoulders, facing right, in the uniform of the Royal Engineers, oil on panel, inscribed and signed 'Au major Chard souvenir amical A. de Neuville' on the image, framed, 280 x 195mm., [c.1879-1880]Footnotes:A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN PORTRAIT OF JOHN CHARD BY ALPHONSE DE NEUVILLE (1836-1885), who included a prominent depiction of Chard in his painting The Defence of Rorke's Drift. In the 38-page catalogue published by the Fine Art Society to accompany the exhibition of the painting, it is noted that 'the painter has had sittings of all the principal actors in the scene who were in this country while he was at work - Major Chard, the Rev. G. Smith.... As for the localities he had the benefit of all forms of topographical record; official plans, Major Chard's sketches..., As to the incidents of the defence, he has had the use not only of Major Chard's official report, and all the letters which appeared at the time, but of many others from actors on the scene'. It is therefore probable that this rapid oil sketch portrait was taken from life at one of the men's meetings to discuss the events of Rorke's Drift.Provenance: John Chard V.C., R.E., gift from the artist Alphonse de Neuville; by descent to the present owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He was by all accounts a brave and flamboyant young gentleman, apparently risking his own life when cholera was rife during the Crimea, by visiting his men in hospital and rubbing their stomachs to try and relieve their suffering. He was a magnificent horseman and a fine shot, and at one time he owned a famous race horse called Muster Roll. Charles is remembered for his nerves of steel, particularly evident in an incident documented by his cousin: on one occasion, when crossing a narrow bridge over a deep gorge, his nervous charger reared up and pivoted round to face oncoming troops in the opposite direction, necessitating him to force the horse onto its hind legs again and repeat the manoeuvre. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath, and was awarded the Crimean Medal, the Turkish Medal and the Indian Mutiny Medal. John Weatherall Smith was the father of Major General Charles Hodgkinson Smith, and the son of General Sir John Smith, and was therefore the fourth of six successive generations of one family to serve in the Royal Artillery. He entered that regiment in 1807 and in 1810 he served as aide-de-camp under his father in Gibraltar. He subsequently saw active service in the Peninsular War, after which he served in Gibraltar under his father again between 1812 and 1814. Here he suffered a severe attack of the prevailing fever; he survived and went on to fulfil the role of Permanent Adjutant of the Royal Artillery at Woolwich, but he never recovered from the effects of the fever, and died a comparatively young man.
* English School. Captain John Smith (1722-1783), Royal Artillery 1742-1783, watercolour, half-length portrait of a young gentleman in military uniform, somewhat spotted, 19 x 15.5 cm (7.5 x 6 ins), mounted, framed and glazed, frame with title plaque, together with commission document, pre-printed on vellum and completed in brown ink, appointing John Smith as Lieutenant Fireworker in the Royal Artillery, dated 1760, with embossed blue paper seals to left margin and signed by the King 'George R' to upper left corner, vertical folds as issued, 27.5 x 39 cm (11 x 15.5 ins)Qty: (2)NOTESCaptain John Smith was the second of six generations of his family to serve in the Royal Artillery, the first being his father, about whom nothing appears to be known. The service of the subsequent generations, however, is well documented. John Smith joined the Artillery in 1742 as a cadet-gunner, subsequently serving as a matross, and eventually receiving his commission as a Lieutenant Fireworker in 1758 (as George III was the first monarch to sign and give commission papers, and he didn't ascend to the throne until 1760, the commission document is dated two years after the commission was given). He was First Lieutenant until 1768 when he was made Captain and given the appointment of Captain Gentlemen Cadet Company, probably as Instructor. John Smith's son was General Sir John Smith (1754-1837), Governor of Gibraltar between 1813 and 1814.

The letter included in the lot states 'It was with great regret that I had to advise you this morning by telegram that your son Sergeant John George Morton was missing as the result of air operation last night. He was the Air Bomber in one of our aircraft which took off yesterday evening on a mission against the enemy, and which unhappily has failed to return. Unfortunately since the aircraft left base we have had no news of the crew or their aircraft. In cases such as these, it is always possible that the crew may have escaped with their lives and been taken prisoners of war ...' Morton was captured after 3 days on the run and was taken to Stalag Luft VI in Heydekrug, Lithuania, in July 1944 it housed over 9000 Allied airmen. When the Russian front approached, orders were given to move the prisoners to the other camps further west. Most of the men were moved by train to Stalag XX-A in West Prussia, however, some 900 including Morton were taken to the port of Memel and boarded a merchant ship to Swinemunde. There they were forced to march from Kiefheinde with many men being bayoneted or shot before they reached Stalag Luft IV in Gross Tychow. This march was one of the famous "Long Marches". The lot includes a letter to the recipient dated 1982 from the Caterpillar Club stating "we have been able to confirm your original application for membership and can therefore supply you with a replacement pin'.
