Collection of 9 odd vols., comprising 2 vols. w. manuscript descriptions of apples (532 and 534 numb. pp), 2 vols. w. manuscript descriptions of pears (528 and 522 numb. pp), and 5 lge-4° vols. w. c. 980 original drawings in colour of pears made by the author, all cut out on outlines and laid down on light blue paper (77; 76; 76; 76; 76 lvs. respectively). (Binds. worn and/or slightly dam., but in fine interior condition). NOTE: Charles Gilbert (1820-1890) came from a well-known family. Destined for a merchant's career, he learned several languages. His older brother Joannes Carolus Petrus was an oilcloth manufacturer. An uncle was an alderman. After the death of his mother in 1843, Gilbert inherited the 'Bleyckhof' in Oelegem, a former bleachery and country residence, owned by the Antwerp Gilbert family for generations. The inheritance allowed him to distance himself from the business world and retire. In this way, the way was clear for Gilbert to fully surrender to his passion: horticulture and pomology. "Op de nationale tentoonstelling van 1880 ontving Gilbert een gouden medaille voor zijn 'Album Pomologique', originele kleurenafbeeldingen en beschrijvingen van ca. 500 peren- en 100 appelsoorten. Deze unieke gegevens werden spijtig genoeg nooit gepubliceerd." (see 'Gilbert' on https://www.bestor.be). - Present are only the plate volumes 1, 4, 5, 6 and 13 devoted to pears (numbering on spines), presenting together well over 980 drawings of pears and cross sections of pears (on a 1:1 scale?), numbered and with their names on printed tickets/or in manuscript, and the 4 text volumes written in a legible hand. From vol. 6 unfortunately some 13 drawings were removed. - On Gilbert's life, see Ed. Lucas in 'Pomologische Monatshefte', 188, p. 321.

The family has produced lords of various lordships, knights and generals, and a commander of the Teutonic Order in Alden Biesen.

Cont. clothbacked brds. w. drawing by hand by C. ter Brugge on front side. NOTE: Account written by an unidentified 'I' who describes his work at the 'Code-dienst' between October 1944 and May 1945 which was located in a factory (part of an old bakery (the 'MBF Bakkerij) on the Vijzelgracht). Unveiling how he and his colleagues worked there under harsh conditions and in complete secrecy. Names occurring: M. Oortman, J.C. Beck, J.H. Schoorel, S. van Straten, L. Vié, K. Zimmer, Bloos, Deys, Van Kempen. Illustrated with original photographs of the 'office' and its location and with tipped in examples of the sort of messages that were conveyed. With autograph dedication on upper endpaper, signed by M. Oortman, to 'Jhr. P[ieter] J[acob] Six' who was a high official within the Dutch resistance ('Ordedienst' (OD)).
STRONGBOX, covered on the inside w. prints. Dutch (?), 2nd h. 17th c. Wood, iron fittings, engravings, leather, woodcuts. 40 x 50 x 40 cm. (Prints unfortunately partly skimmed by silverfish). NOTE: The lid of the strongbox contains on the inside a richly blind tooled leather cover plate on which two coloured woodcuts (?) are pasted with representations of 'spring' and a 'shepherd and a shepherdess', both bearing the address of the Antwerp publisher Frederik Bouttats. When the cover plate is folded away, an image of Christ as a good shepherd appears on the back side: a copy after a design by Maarten de Vos, published by Martinus van Beusecom (Hollstein 608, copy d). The inside of the lid also contains a double portrait of King Frederick of Denmark and his wife Sophia Amalia, with the address of François van Beusecom. The edges of the lid are decorated with colourful paper. This seventeenth century chest follows a tradition in which chests like ours were covered with prints on the inside. It probably also had a division on the bottom (a removable container?), but that is no longer present. It can be locked with a large key. - As described and depicted in the catalogue (added to this lot): 'Prenten in de Gouden Eeuw van kunst tot kastpapier'. Rotterdam, 2006, cat. # 32 (p. 39).
ALBERTUS MAGNUS. De secretis mulierum et viroru[m]. (Augsburg, J. Froschauer, c. 1500). (33 lvs.). 4°. Old vellum. (Bind. warped, margins ti-p. rep., sev. o. marginal rep., last blank (g4) lacks, rather stained throughout). NOTE: Drawing on Hippocratic, Galenic and Aristotelian theories on sex and reproduction, this work of natural philosophy examines the 'secret' nature of women. The discussion is both medical, philosophical and astrological. Some chapters are strictly medical and concern the signs of conception, the gestation period and the nature of menstruation, others deal with the influence that the planets and constellations have on the development of the foetus before birth. The text, attributed to Albertus Magnus, is accompanied by an extensive commentary traditionally considered to be the work of Henricus de Saxonia. - Rare. GW 735; VD 16, A-1413; Proctor 1858; Hain 555; Goff A-315. - From the library of van der Hoeven and with his bookplate.
