Integration of Art and Industry: The Bauhaus emphasized the integration of art and industry, seeking to bridge the gap between art and everyday life. The origins of Vanden Plas went back to Carrosserie Van den Plas, formed in Belgium in 1898, and an English subsidiary established in 1913. In the 1920s it went bust but was reformed and prospered making bodywork for the likes of Bentley and Alvis. Acquired by BMC in 1946. By the late 1950s the company was engaged in adding luxury fittings to a range of Austin-Morris models produced by BMC. In 1963, the ADO16 range of saloons began to be upgraded culminating in the lavishly equipped Vanden Plas 1300 Princess as offered here. Leather upholstery, wood veneer, a distinctive radiator grille and special badging distinguished these VDP examples, whilst the 1.3-litre twin carburettor engine shared with the MG models developed some 65bhp, resulting in a 90mph top speed.Having been registered on 7th February 1972. The car went through a comprehensive restoration in 2021. Appearing to have covered just 84,000 miles from new. The car now looks like the car could have concours winning potential. Whilst the Vanden Plas Princess isn’t considered something overtly special, or highly desirable, we have to say this car is! In the catalogue we can see why you might just flick past. However, everyone who has walked up to this car has been blown away by how good it looks and feels. In the flesh, it beats some other great cars we have to offer. The history file shows 4 previous keepers and comes with a document wallet with some photographic evidence as well as invoices and notes, of the work carried out in 2021. If you do nothing else take some time whilst you are at Bishton to pay homage to this beautiful piece of engineered luxury. You won’t regret it.

1959 Austin Mini Se7en Deluxe Saloon Registration no. XAA 807 Chassis no. A-A2S7-7854 Engine no. 8AM-U-H/411714 (see text)•Dating from the first year of Mini production•Restored in the late 1980s•Regularly attendee at car shows and rallies throughout the Southeast•Substantial history file'The new Mini was as different from the British small car norm in 1959 as a space shuttle from a firework. It bristled with innovative ideas, it looked radically different from any other car and was the most compact 'real' car Britain ever produced.' – Chris Rees, Complete Classic Mini. One of the most influential automobiles of all time, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini debuted in 1959 to universal acclaim. True, there had been numerous front-wheel-drive designs before the Mini's arrival, but the transverse engine layout allowed Issigonis to create a trend-setting masterpiece of automotive packaging. The first Mini prototypes were running by November 1957 and in April 1959 the first pre-production examples were hand-assembled at Austin's Longbridge factory. In May 1959, the first Morris-badged version was built at Cowley and that car, registration '621 AOK', now forms part of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust's collection at Gaydon. Less than two-and-a-half years after its initial conception the Mini was officially launched at the 1959 Motor Show, having been shown to the motoring press eight days previously. BMC chose to market the car as the 'Austin Se7en' and 'Morris Mini Minor' before 'Mini' became a marque in its own right in 1969. In due course estate and van versions arrived, larger engines became available, more luxurious Riley and Wolseley models joined the line-up and the sporting Mini Cooper was introduced. The early Mk1 had the 848cc A-Series engine, rubber cone suspension and floor-mounted starter button, the latter two features being replaced by Hydrolastic suspension and key starting respectively in 1964. De Luxe versions – preferred by the majority of customers – came with bumper over-riders and additional exterior brightwork.Competed on 30th November 1959, this very early Austin Se7en was despatched new to Haigs Motor Co Ltd in Southsea, Hampshire. Originally finished in Tartan Red with grey/red interior, it left the factory equipped with a heater, kicking strips, and a rubber mat in boot, and was registered as 'XAA 807' on 18th December 1959. It would appear that the original engine ('8AM-U-H/7590') has since been replaced. The car's early history is unknown until 1973 when it was purchased in Southampton for £95. The Mini was used continuously and well loved. The same family owned the car until 1986, by which time it was worn out and had been garage stored for some considerable time. In 1988 'XAA' was purchased by Malcolm Bell and lovingly restored using many original parts. The Mini was also returned to its original red exterior colour. Since then the car has been maintained by the aforementioned owner, regularly attending shows and rallies throughout the Southeast. There is a substantial file with the car containing numerous old MoTs, ownership history, bills and other documents, while in the boot may be found sundry spares, some books, and other associated equipment. Described by the vendor as in generally good, condition, though with some minor cosmetic imperfections, 'XAA 807' represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a restored example of one of the 20th Century's greatest cars in its earliest, purest form. 1985 Austin Maestro 700 City Van Registration no. B959 DOF Chassis no. SAXXCHGD1AM281900 Engine no. 12HB12AA0101029Replacing the outgoing Ambassador model, the Maestro debuted as Austin Rover Group's new medium sized hatchback in 1983, but unlike its predecessor used steel springs rather than the Hydragas suspension system and mounted its gearbox at the end of the crankshaft instead of beneath it. Engine options ranged from the venerable 1.3-litre A-Series to more modern 1.6- and 2.0-litre overhead-camshaft units, while the VW Golf gearbox was an example of cross-manufacturer technology sharing. Offered here is an example of the Maestro-based light van. First registered to Patrick Motors Ltd as '280 PMG', this vehicle was used to deliver parts to Austin dealerships and was liveried to match the Patrick Motors branding at that time. 1985 Bedford Astra Van Registration no. B85 EOG Chassis no. SKF000037FE107807 Engine no. 1314369General Motors imported Chevrolet commercial vehicles into the UK during the 1920s before setting up domestic manufacture at Vauxhall's Luton plant under the 'Bedford' brand name in 1931. Chevrolet cabs were used initially but otherwise the first Bedfords were entirely new and successful to such an extent that the company coined the advertising slogan 'You See Them Everywhere'. Bedford's light commercial vans were, as one might expect, based on Vauxhall chassis and this 1.3-litre Astra Van is derived from its popular Vauxhall saloon car namesake. It is one of GM's last light commercials to be badged as a Bedford - later ones were Vauxhall. This Bedford Astra was originally registered to Reeve & Stedeford of Solihull (Patrick Motors' Jaguar/Daimler dealership) and used as a parts delivery van. Registered to Patrick Motors Ltd in 1993, it has not been driven for many years and will require recommissioning before further use. Offered with an old-style V5C document.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1992 Rover Mini 'British Open Classic' Saloon Registration no. K450 EKV Chassis no. SAXXNYADBBD054952•Rare 'special edition' Mini•One of 1,000 UK-market examples'The new Mini was as different from the British small car norm in 1959 as a space shuttle from a firework. It bristled with innovative ideas, it looked radically different from any other car and was the most compact 'real' car Britain ever produced.' – Chris Rees, 'Complete Classic Mini'.One of the most influential automobiles of all time, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini debuted in 1959 to universal acclaim. True, there had been numerous front-wheel-drive designs before the Mini's arrival, but the transverse engine layout allowed Issigonis to create a trend-setting masterpiece of automotive packaging. The early Mk1 had the 848cc A-Series engine, rubber cone suspension and floor-mounted starter button, the latter two features being replaced by Hydrolastic suspension and key starting respectively in 1964.'Special Edition' Minis first appeared in the mid-1970s and that offered here is an example of one of the two 1992 offerings, the Mini 'British Open Classic', the other being the Mini 'Italian Job'. Finished in British Racing Green metallic, the 'Open Classic' was the first special edition to be based on the new 1.3-litre Mini and the first UK-market model with a folding sunroof, the latter electrically operated. Being one of just 1, 000 built, this example has been subject to recent restoration works. The car upgrades include being resprayed in British Racing Green with an added touch of sparkle, along with a stage one kit (including LCB manifold & single box, manifold exhaust, fitted with 13 x 7' Minilite wheels and sportpack arches, custom made alum chequer-plate dash with centre clock, Hi-Lo's Spa adjustable dampers, poly bushes, aluminium radiator and copper lines). The suspension was set up by Southam Mini & Metro Centre. Displaying 55,233 miles on the odometer, the car comes with V5, 2 keys, handbook and service log. 1955 Austin A40 Devon Van Registration no. UYC 177 Chassis no. GV5/91915Like most British motor manufacturers, Austin recommenced civilian production after WW2 with pre-war designs, its first new models not appearing until 1947. One of the most important introductions was the A40, which replaced the old 8hp, 10hp and 12hp models. Somewhat conservative in its retention of a separate chassis, the new A40 was built as the two-door Dorset (soon discontinued) and four-door Devon saloons, plus the Devon van. Although the A40 Devon saloon was replaced in 1952 by the Somerset, the Devon van continued in the range until 1956. This A40 Devon van was owned by flower shop proprietor Mr Roland F Harris for 25 years. He was followed by Mr W Lee (three years); Mr M G Snelin; A E Brabham (four years); and Mr Kenneth Eric Brunt (21 years), the latter displaying the vehicle in his Memory Lane Museum in Ireland, during which period it covered only seven miles. Owner of the Welsh Transport Museum, our vendor has owned the van for the last eight years. The wiring loom has been replaced and the van is said to be in good condition and largely original apart from the exterior paintwork (resprayed to cover previous sign writing).Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1979 Peugeot 304 Van Registration no. TNP 540V Chassis no. 4198544 Engine no. 4198544Most motor manufacturers base their light van designs on models from their passenger car range, and this Peugeot commercial is derived from the French firm's 304 saloon. Styled by Pininfarina, the latter was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1969 and would enjoy a lengthy production run, the last (estate) models leaving the factory in 1980, by which time nearly 1.2 million had been produced. Of advanced specification, the 304 featured front-wheel drive, independent suspension and disc brakes, and was powered by an all-alloy single-overhead-camshaft inline four that would be offered in various capacities up to 1.3 litres (petrol) and 1.5 litres (diesel). The body's generously proportioned centre section was inherited from the smaller 204, the 304's extra length providing a much bigger boot. The van version (fourgonette in France) was introduced in September 1977.This 304 van was originally registered to Patrick Motors Ltd and used at their Peugeot/Talbot dealership in Evesham for delivering parts. The vehicle has not been driven for many years and will require recommissioning before further use.
