Margaret Ashman I Am Strong (4). 2020 Phototransfer and Monoprint on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Margaret Ashman is a printmaker whose work is a meditation on the unseen, spiritual, emotional and otherness of life. Using photographs or video stills, sometimes layering images from multiple sources she creates pieces in which a solitary dancer fills or interacts with a space. Dancers or Deaf signers are photographed performing contemporary dance or signing to particular songs or texts. She also works from video stills of dancers, always gaining the permission of the dance artist first. The manipulated imagery is transferred to multiple etching plates using traditional acids and aquatint, imparting a particular textural quality to the finished prints. While working in Great Fosters, Ates imagined these characters that once lived in the house. Ates says, 'They were absent; however, through the objects in the rooms, the interiors and the exterior of the building, I wanted to trace the "present" of some of the previous occupiers.' This new body of work confronts the intense dialogue between the past and present in this grand historic house.   Guler's photographs were taken in the majestic settings of the Italian Room, Panel II Room and the Tapestry Room at Great Fosters, complete with 17th century Flemish tapestries and a carved wooden Jacobean chimneypiece. The Italian Room is finished with carved Quattrocentro doors and damask covered walls. The darkness in the rooms, a consequence of the Tudor architecture, plays a significant role in the work of Ates, whose ambiguously veiled female figures illuminate against the dramatic backdrop of rich, heavy drapery. The extreme contrast is one element employed by the artist in order to create the fluid, floating apparitions that have become synonymous with Ates' work. Ates herself is inspired by Dutch Old Master paintings and the darkness and intensity of the works on display are reminiscent of these masters of painting. Her body of work comments on the Western notion of Orientalism and the effects of the cross pollination of cultures on female identity and architecture.   The text was written by Marcelle Joseph, edited by Güler Ates Condition Report:   Condition Report Disclaimer

Diploma Graduation Exhibition, PTIS - Chiang Mai Thailand   About the postcard artworks   With 'In All My Glory' - I wanted to celebrate all sides of our being as women. Although it is easy to celebrate ourselves through our triumphs, it is the hardships that truly place our sense of self-love and acceptance on trial. Its through hardship that we learn who we truly are, our strength, weaknesses, our priorities, and how to continuously fight ourselves. Dark blues, light blues, light yellows peeking, thick limbs, pink mountains. To be soft and playful, yet to take up space and become heavy. All of it is okay. All of it is valid. It is an ongoing process to take ownership of all of it. But through every crack, every detail, I'd like to celebrate - in all our glory, as we are. "

* Stuart (Charles, later Baron Stuart de Rothesay, 1779-1845). Collection of autograph letter drafts, Berlin and Vienna, c.1801-4, perhaps 10 discrete letters in all, including 5 addressed to Robert, Lord Hobart (later 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire) as secretary of state for war and the colonies, 1 addressed to 'My Dear Lord' (probably Hobart), and 4 either unaddressed or to 'Sir' or 'My Dear Sir', various extents, about 73 pp. in total, generally 4toQty: (-)NOTESNAPOLEONIC MANUSCRIPTS AND LETTERS INCLUDING SELECTIONS FROM THE CHARLES STUART PAPERS Charles Stuart (1779-1845) entered the diplomatic service in 1801, serving first as secretary of legation at Vienna (1801-4), then secretary of embassy at St Petersburg (1804-8). He subsequently undertook intelligence gathering with the provincial juntas in French-occupied Spain (1808-10) and made himself indispensable to Wellington as minister at Lisbon (1810-14); he was minister at the courts of both the king of the Netherlands and the exiled Louis XVIII during the 'Hundred Days', and at Paris from 1815 to 1824, and in 1825 helped negotiate the treaty by which Brazil became independent from Portugal. These drafts contain a wealth of confidential information and well-informed personal reflections on military affairs, the minutiae of diplomatic relations, and trends in the broader political situation. Of special interest is Stuart's scandalised interpretation of Napoleon's execution of the duc d'Enghien ('Without commenting upon the atrocity of this murder I shall detail a few facts which took place during Mr Pagets absence which induce me to suspect that an indirect communication from hence contributed to hasten the catastrophe'). His dispatch on 'the conquest of the Tyrol & the brilliant successes of the arch duke' (referring possibly to events in the War of the Fifth Coalition in 1809) is a valuable attempt to see through the fog of war ('The exaggerations of the accounts received from the army in Germany renders it difficult to give a true version of the events whch really have taken place in Bavaria'). There are also noteworthy details on the fluctuating relations between France, Russia and Prussia, the relative position of the Ottoman Empire, and British military operations in South America ('Indian troops to rendezous at the Cape to meet 2 British regiments from home, hence to proceed & siege Monte Video on the River Plate … In this quarter it will be adviseable [sic] to employ black troops ie West Indian Regts').
