Lot 325

A BLUE AND WHITE KANGXI PERIOD PORCELAIN BALUSTER VASE, VUNG TAO CARGOChina, Kangxi period (1662-1721). The baluster shaped vase rising from a splayed foot to a short waisted neck, decorated in underglaze blue with flower blooms borne on leafy stems, the base with an artemisia leaf mark and an old Christies label (see provenance). With a domed cover painted similarly to the vase and surmounted by a bud-shaped finial. Condition: With wear, minor firing irregularities and surface alteration consistent with objects from maritime salvage such as encrustations. The mouth rim with a forked hairline and the cover with a chip to the rim and a glaze flake to the finial. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired at Galerie Zacke in 2006 for 2.303 EUR at the time, copies of an old invoice as well as an old Zacke catalogue page illustrating the piece will be handed to the winning bidder. The base with a collection label reading: Christie´s, VungTao Carg, LOT 604, the underside of the lid with collections numbers: HC90-S.381 and S.381. Weight: 740 g Dimensions: Height 24 cmIn 1989, a Vietnamese fisherman discovered the 'Vung Tao Cargo' on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. The salvaged contents were sold a Christie's Amsterdam in a two-day sale of 1011 lots on 7th and 8th April 1992. There was little to date the wreck except a few coins of the reign of the emperor Kangxi (1662-1722) and an inkstick bearing the cyclical date corresponding to AD 1690. The best evidence lies in fact in the study of the porcelain itself that must have been produced within a decade of AD 1683, the year that ceramic historians regard as the official date of the re-opening of China's kilns at Jingdezhen after the Civil War that had disrupted the industry since the 1630s.

Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998), American journalist and novelist, considered one of the 20th century's greatest war correspondents, third wife of Ernest Hemingway. An archive of autograph letters, photographs and ephemera sent by Martha Gellhorn to Andrew Tarnowski, a captain in the Carpathian Lancers, with whom she formed a friendship in Italy while working as a war correspondent. The archive comprises four typed letters signed; five signed & inscribed postcards; four signed & inscribed Christmas cards; two U.S. War Correspondent badges; an original photograph depicting Martha Gellhorn with Andrew Tarnowski in Italy during WW2, and a Polish edition of The Carpathian Lancers, 1966, in which the photograph is published. One of the letters is critical of the Vietnam war, 'We are behaving, in Vietnam, like the Nazi army in Poland; I don't believe for a minute in this "Communist aggression" talk (I always remember how the Nazis were going to save the world from Bolshevism too); it is the ugliest power politics, as mad as it is wicked, and we are killing the Vietnamese as if they were non-people, and an enormous number of poor conscripted young Americans are pointlessly dying too in this murder operation...My one hope is that we get a decent President in 1968, but we may not even have a choice beyond the idiocy of Johnson and Nixon. Unfortunately the whole world suffers for the wicked stupidities of our government.'One of letters gives a moving insight into the difficulties of continuing work as a war correspondent while raising a precious child, 'Journalism is hell now for me, because I can't bear being away from Sandy, who grows and changes every day; and I feel cheated to miss any of his baby years. He is too beautiful and funny and charming to be described, and now he talks too, some English, more Spanish, in a sweet soft voice like a dove...I do not believe any other thing in the world matters, except to love another human being and look after that one...Here in Mexico, no one talks or seems to think about War Number Three, which is a lovely state of affairs. I don't think about it either because I refuse to. I live as if life were going to last forever and go quietly and peacefully through my days, playing with the child, managing the house and doing my writing; and I read no newspapers and never listen to the radio, since I mean to be happy as long as I can and not torment myself in advance with the thought of chaos...This trip was not for pleasure, it was only to get enough money, as fast as possible, to feed us for another year...I came back here so tired I slept for a week.'In another letter, she states, 'Year after year, men go on killing each other, fighting wars which are certainly as pointless and insane as the Wars of the Roses....Dearest Andrew, no one really wins in this life but some of us win something. You've won that lovely warm thing of loving your child and surely of being loved by her. It's a big something. The older I get, the more sure I am that love alone matters.'Provenance: By descent of Andrew Tarnowski

He graduated with his BA in 1952, then, after some graduate work at the University of Minnesota, moved to Michigan to continue his education at Cranbrook Academy of Art, from which he graduated with his MFA in 1954. He received the Fulbright scholarship to study sculpture in Italy, and on this trip and a subsequent period of study as a Guggenheim Fellow in Rome, he was exposed to important works of traditional sculpture as well as new sculptural techniques. After studying in Italy, Granlund returned to Minnesota, and was a faculty member at the Minnesota College of Art and Design throughout the 1960s. He returned to Gustavus Adolphus as sculptor in residence in 1971, a title he kept until 1996, when he retired, although he kept a studio at Gustavus Adolphus until his death in 2003. His art adorns much of the campus there, often demonstrating his adeptness at using sculpture as a method of Biblical interpretation.During his long career, Granlund taught and exhibited throughout the United States, as well as creating many important pieces of public art, including the Vietnam War Memorial at the Minnesota Governor’s Mansion. His dedication to creating all parts of the sculpture himself, including casting his own bronze, made him unique among sculptors, as did his versatility, with his sculptures ranging from traditional-seeming figural works to mind-bending abstract pieces.Height: 29 1/4 in x width: 18 1/4 in x depth: 7 3/4 in.Condition: No visible dents, cracks, or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. Wear throughout. Light oxidation throughout, most noticeably along the upper back of the mirror image. Throughout the sculpture, there is uneven coloration visible; however, it appears to be the original design intended by the artist. Wear along the underside.
