Offered in 'as-new' condition, this final-production 'Ultima Edition' has covered just 685km from new.Introduced in June 2003, the Volkswagen Sedán Última Edición was distributed to VW dealers across Mexico. Limited to 2,999 examples, they were offered in just two colours, Aquarius Blue (Baby) or Harvest Moon (Beige) and were the final incarnation of the world's most beloved car. Ultimately, having been around for over 50 years, the Beetle's time had come with demand having dried up but, as is the way of things, the last few cars out of Mexico became the subject of 'bidding wars' with one purportedly offered for $1,000,000. Fittingly, the last ever car was destined for the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg.Displaying just 685km, this example found its way to the UK and has been in a private UK collection ever since. It's presented in the original factory Harvest Moon coachwork with Ultima Edition badging and contrasting grey cloth interior. Special features of this final edition include 165/80 R 15 whitewall radial tyres, 5J × 15 body-coloured stamped steel wheels, AM/FM stereo CD player with four speakers and chromed aerial, a special commemorative plaque on the glove box cover and an emblem with the Coat of Arms of the City of Wolfsburg on the bonnet lid. This is a rare opportunity to purchase one of those final 2,999 Beetles and, in this condition and this mileage, it's probably the best example available. When you consider that it's on offer at 'No Reserve' this seems like an unrepeatable proposition. An early, Pre-A Speedster on a set of Rudge knock-off alloys, one of the most collectable Porsches of all time.Porsche’s remarkable 356 put the Zuffenhausen Company firmly on the automotive map in the 1950s, with Dr Ferdinand’s original design - a somewhat basic sports car closely based on Volkswagen’s Beetle - evolving into a technically advanced, beautifully resolved machine over a production life spanning more than 15 years. The earliest 356s were powered by a Volkswagen-derived flat-four displacing 1068cc and rated at 40hp, but the 1300cc engine became an option from 1951 onwards. In 1952, the body was refined with a one-piece windscreen (bent in the middle) and revised bumpers, while a new 1488cc engine became available with a roller-bearing crankshaft, twin Solex carburettors and a handy 60bhp on tap. Other improvements included duplex front brakes, a rear parcel shelf and revised instrumentation (the tacho became standard). Stronger brakes, full synchromesh gearboxes across the range and a new two-spoke steering wheel appeared in 1953 and two new 1500cc engines were introduced, the 55bhp standard unit and the 70bhp 'Super'. Sold in Coupé, Cabriolet and Speedster variants, the so-called ‘Pre-A’ 356 is highly prized amongst collectors for its rarity and purity of design. Built at the instigation of Porsche’s North American distributor, Max Hoffman, the original Speedster was a stripped down, open-topped version of the 356 and became very successful in North America as a dual-purpose sports car, proving popular with amateur racing drivers competing in SCCA events. Porsche built approximately 920 Pre-A Speedsters before adopting the new Type 616/1 and 616/2 engines in October 1955 and a total of 1,234 Pre-A cars were made prior to the official introduction of the 356A in January 1956. The left-hand drive Speedster we have on offer here is an early one, indeed it’s the 347th car produced and the accompanying Kardex card confirms that it was completed on 3rd March 1955 prior to being delivered to Hoffman’s in New York City.Little is known about the car's early history although it has been enjoyed by its current owner for more than 20 years in Monaco. Recently, it's been looked after by award-winning Porsche restorers, Sportwagen in Southend as well as JAZ Porsche and recent attention includes a minor service with the relevant documentation on file.Sitting on a set of the desirable and valuable Rudge knock-off alloy wheels, the 356 is now attractively finished in Dunkelblau with a grey leatherette interior. The original colour was Signal Red according to the Kardex and additionally the Speedster now also boasts a more powerful 1600 cc engine.Overall, this is a car to use and enjoy, it's one for a driving enthusiast. If you’re after a matching numbers, Concours restoration with history from new, then this car is perhaps not for you, however, if you’re in the market for a highly usable example that you could still be proud to own and is priced very competitively, then this cracking little Speedster may well be worth the effort to come and see it in the metal at our NEC sale and investigate a bit further. Thanks in part to its association with glamorous film stars like James Dean and Steve McQueen, the 356 Speedster has always been a very desirable Porsche and any Pre-A version ranks amongst the most collectable Porsches of all, with a cult following that shows no signs of waning.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 356Year: 1955Chassis Number: 80347Registration Number: 670 UXBTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: LeatheretteClick here for more details and images
Car 459 of a limited edition of 1,000 marking the end of production of VW South Africa's version of the iconic Golf Mk1 in 2009, UK registered and just 16,598km.When Volkswagen released the original Golf in 1974, the car was an overnight success. Easy, economical to drive and inexpensive to maintain. Volkswagen South Africa started the assembly of the Golf Mk1 under licence in 1978, however, when the second generation Golf arrived in 1984, Volkswagen South Africa found themselves unable to supply the demand for a small, affordable entry-level car, as the Mk2 was bigger and somewhat more expensive than its predecessor. The most viable option for VW SA was to continue producing a variant of the Mk1, designed to fill the gap in the market for a reliable, solid, safe car for the local population. Using the same body shell as the Mk1, the 'Citi Golf' was launched in 1984 as a mildly facelifted,1.6-litre, five-door, alongside companion saloon and two-door utility models. The Citi Golf's 25 year lifespan saw hundreds of modifications, both cosmetic, to satisfy consumer demand, and mechanical to comply with safety and emission standards. Cost savings from using the Mk1 shell allowed the Citi to be better appointed than its rivals, with accessories made available over the years from the Volkswagen Group parts department. To commemorate the end of production of the Citi in 2009, the Citi Mk1 was launched. This edition was limited to just 1,000 cars, with special features that included lowered suspension, 15” alloy wheels, tinted windows, a leather sports steering wheel with airbag, and chrome foil side-stripes. The lovely example on offer here is Number 459 of those 1,000 cars and is finished in Black Magic Pearl, one of two colours available, and optioned with half-leather seats trimmed with black cloth. It was imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA on the 1st October 2019 as 'YL09 OZK, however, our vendor thought that particular registration did not quite suit the little Citi, so it now wears the current private registration, RRZ 9617, which will remain with the car.Presented to auction in exceptional condition with just 16,598 kilometres or 10,313 miles at the time of cataloguing, the service book states that the most recent service was carried out less than 435 km ago 22nd September 2021 and the car has just been issued with an advisory free MOT. An official book commemorating the Citi, unused mats still in their Volkswagen packaging, VWSA brochures, main dealer service receipts, VW heritage letter, original radio and bill of sale accompany the car.Whilst the car’s condition and rarity warrants a place in a collection, it is also eminently suitable as a daily driver for the enthusiast that loves the retro looks of a classic car but appreciates the modern enhancements fitted by the manufacturer from new. It sits within its own niche in the market and elements of the car’s features may seem incongruous at first glance but make perfect sense in context, however, you'll probably never see another and despite its humble origins, its sheer rarity means it would be welcome anywhere.SpecificationMake: VWModel: GOLFYear: 2009Chassis Number: AAVZZZ17Z9U015442Registration Number: RRZ 9617Transmission: ManualEngine Number: AFX088681 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 10313 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Leather/ClothClick here for more details and images
A UK-supplied Corrado with the rare and costly VW Motorsport-upgraded VSR engine. Arriving in late 1991 the VR6-engined version of the Volkswagen Corrado was hailed by CAR magazine as one of '25 cars you must drive before you die’, while Auto Express rated it as among ‘VW’s best ever drivers’ cars’. Sharing the same handsome Herbert Schafer-penned silhouette as its four-cylinder siblings, the newcomer sported a wider front track so as to accommodate its six-cylinder powerplant. Responsible for inspiring VAG’s later Bentley W12 and Bugatti W16 designs, the freshly developed engine featured an unusually narrow Vee angle of 15 degrees meaning that it only need a single cylinder head. Sonorous and punchy, it produced some 188bhp and 181lb/ft of torque and was allied to either 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. Equipped with MacPherson struts up front and trailing arms plus a torsion beam at the rear, the manual VR6 was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and 145mph; seriously impressive figures during the early 1990s and still respectable today.More impressive, and much rarer, is the Corrado VR6 VSR – an upgrade that was dropped before production on cost grounds and was instead offered as an aftermarket option. The 2.9-litre VR6 engine was originally designed to benefit from a dual-tract variable-length inlet manifold called VSR (German: ‘Variables SaugRohr’) and was made by Pierburg for Volkswagen Motorsport, giving extra low-down torque. A very rare and highly desirable genuine VW modificationThe car presented here is one of these rare VSR models, having previously had long-term ownership by a Corrado Club GB member, and has been known to the club for a decade or more, having previously been displayed as a 'best of breed' example at the NEC Classic Car Show. The car has covered just 49,893 miles (atoc) and is described by our vendor as in ‘virtually concours condition throughout’, having gone through a fully documented and photographed rebuild (between 2011-2013) for apparently no other reason than making it as perfect as possible. Indeed, the underneath is said to be immaculate, as too is the full grey leather interior.Accompanying the car are five folders full of information, service history, photographs and receipts. It was during its rebuild it had fitted the genuine VW Motorsport VSR kit which varies, via a vacuum system, the inlet manifold tracts improving the driveability of the car and increasing power (now 212bhp from dyno tests within the history folders). There is a full stainless-steel genuine VW exhaust system fitted also, to further aide power. Another key improvement is the addition of KW fully adjustable coil-overs all round carried out by the current owner that sensibly improves the stance and handling. The car is understood to drive wonderfully, with a sonorous exhaust bark as it reaches the higher end of the rev range, the current owner having used it for trips to the Lake District, Northern Ireland and France in recent years.Corrado aficionados will note the ASB light goes out promptly and the sunroof works flawlessly. The ‘VSR’ number plate is included in the sale..SpecificationMake: VOLKSWAGENModel: CORRADOYear: 1996Chassis Number: WVWZZZ50ZSK002404Registration Number: N100 VSRTransmission: ManualEngine Number: ABV015846Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 49893 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images
