C1093 between 2nd April and 4th September 1918, a telegram to Green from the Burslem Staff 'Heartiest congratulations from 32 Squadron on receiving DFC' and the following typed letter dated July 23rd 1918 sent from France; 'My dear mother & dad, how is everything at home now? Here we are doing well and today is the first dud day since our arrival in the war and even now it shows signs of clearing. For three days we were escorting bombers to various places 10-20 kilos behind the lines, and although we attacked Huns who tried to get to the bombers we were unable to get a real scrap. We kept the bombers free and enabled them to do their job well and I can tell you some of the dumps and fires which went up were just great to see. One in particular burned for nearly two hours.Everyone was pleased with our show so last night the Colonel says to me "Green I want you to get some Huns tonight" I leave it to you you see I have for a fortnight been leading the squadron "Very Good" says I and off we went.Sure enough I spotted a scrap between eleven Camels and about twenty-five Huns, and waited the cycological moment and just took my crowd right in. I shot a Hun painted blue and white off a Camel's tail ie one who was chasing a Camel and shooting him up, he went away to beat the band. Then the leader, a big scarlet fellow attacked me from underneath, so I said to myself "Let's Go". Just got my sights on him and pressed both knees and pumped one hundred round right into him. Just imagine the excitement of the moment! Old boy Hun, quite one of the best fighters I have ever met, coming up at me shooting like nothing on earth and yours truly driving about one hundred and eighty MPH at him, head to head, shooting fifteen hundred rounds a minute at him. He would not give way, neither would I, we got so close I thought we must hit, but no, my shots took effect and he turned on his back and went down absolutely out of control - finished. Then I had to look out, two other Huns were onto my tail, eventually I got them off and got a burst into one of them but did not get him. By this time we had got down to ten thousand feet, and were nearly twenty miles over, so I got my fellows together and quit. All together we got four down, three other boys getting one each while we did not lose anyone bon! The fight lasted about five minutes but it seemed years. Apparently the Huns were those left from Richtofins [sic] crowd and the finest fellows in the Hun R.F.C. The old red boy I got, sure could fight, but our machines were the better, also I took every advantage possible of the sun, height and wind. All together it was a good show and everyone was frightfully pleased.Coming back across the lines I attacked four other Huns and drove them down, but was unable to get close enough to do any good shooting. That makes three for me down here inside a week. The CO came back again last night so we are almost complete again now. Your loving son, Wilf.'Also included in this lot is Wilfred's gold plated pocket watch and the Flying Log Book of his elder brother Lieutenant Thomas Seaman Green R.F.C.
