A collection of 19th century ephemera relating to French Royalist émigré Victor Pierre Jean de Gaudrion Chevalier de St Louis, comprising letters and official documents, mostly in French and with Second Empire and Royal stamps, to include many Ministere de la Guerre documents regarding orders, war wounded funds and pensions, pay etc, certificate of service in the Garde du Roi dated January 1816, signed by the Duc de Berry and bearing the stamp of the Commissioner of War, a letter in English dated 11th December 1802 from St James Palace to the ‘Chevalier de Gaudrion, late Lieutenant in Roteliers Artillery’ declining his request to serve again in the Military Department of the Ordnance, and a cutting from the Times Literary Supplement dated 25th September 1930 relating to the Battle of Quiberon in 1795 in which de Gaudrion took part and which resulted in the massacre of Royalist prisoners. Together with a privately printed copy of ‘Reminiscences of Victor P.J de Gaudrion, Chevalier de St Louis' which was commissioned by his daughter in 1882, a framed watercolour of de Gaudrion's wife Maria De Gaudrion (daughter of General Fawcett) which was painted at Lymington in 1831, 12.5 x 10.5cm, and copious later hand-written notes detailing the family history etc (a full list of the documents is included in the lot). Note: Victor Pierre Jean de Gaudrion (1771-1855) was due to take up a position as Queen Marie Antionette's page at the age of 14, but a bout of smallpox prevented him from assuming the post, and French events moved on without him. Upon his recovery, he was instead sent to Metz Artillery School and by 1791 was in the service of the exiled brothers of Louis XVI in Coblentz. When plots to restore the French monarchy failed, he was exiled to London where he became a second Lieutenant as one of many French Royalists joining foreign forces trying to defeat Napoleon. He fought in Portugal against the invading French for 6 years before returning to England until the restoration of Louis XVIII to the French throne. After being knighted Chevalier de St Louis, Victor had to escort the king into exile again during Napoleon's 100-day resurgence until the decisive Battle of Waterloo in 1815. His loyalty to the crown earned him further promotions including command of the artillery at St Malo, where he met his wife, daughter of General Fawcett, in 1818. Victor continued in this role until 1830 and died in 1855, his wife and daughters returned to England full-time. Unfortunately, Victor did not live to meet his grand-daughters who became formidable fighters in their own right; one being the scholar Margaret de Gaudrion Verrall, who was one of the first cohort of women to graduate from Newnham College; and the other being Flora (de Gaudrion) Merrifield, a leading early suffragist.
