WILLIAM SIMPSON (BRITISH 1823-1899) THE SOLITARY SURVIVOR Signed, inscribed ‘Dr. Brydon as he arrived at Jellalabad, 19th Jan. 1842’ further inscribed on contemporary label verso (see note) and dated 1879, watercolour 31cm x 41cm (12.25in x 16in) Note: A contemporary label to the backboard reads: 'This drawing has been done from descriptions given on the spot, in January 1879, by Major Bailey, 4th Bat. Rifle Brigade - who saw Dr. Bryden as he came into Jellalabad on the 13th Jan.1842 - Major Bailey served at that time in the 'Illustrious Defence of Jellalabad under Sir Robert Sale and was again in active service at the same place in the late War. The landscape shows part of the walls of Jellalabad with the Caboo Gate and the Ram Koond Mountain nearly 18000 feet high. Sketched on the spot in Jan. 1879. Price 35 guineas.
