Manfred Dolleschel portait un intérêt tout particulier aux meilleures automobiles construites en France et tout naturellement la marque Hispano-Suiza faisait partie du haut du panier, particulièrement celles des années 1920. La voiture que nous présentons a toujours été parmi ses préférées et, respectant ses origines françaises, elle fut cantonnée dans sa propriété familiale dans le sud de la France où il pouvait en profiter pendant les mois d'été. M. Dolleschel était sans conteste le gardien rêvé pour la voiture et un de ceux que son propriétaire d'origine, John Jay Ide autre Francophile, aurait certainement approuvé. John Jay Ide était l'arrière-petit-fils d'un des premiers diplomates américain, John Jay, président de la cour suprême. Ide traça sa propre carrière, éduqué aux États-Unis, il avait fait ses études à Columbia University où il reçut son diplôme d'architecture en 1913, partant pour Paris l'année suivante afin d'y poursuivre ses études à l'École des Beaux Arts. Travaillant comme architecte pour H.T. Lindeberg à la fin des années 1910 et au début des années 1920, son grand intérêt pour l'aviation l'amena aussi à servir d'assistant technique auprès du National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), basé à l'ambassade américaine à Paris. Quelques articles historiques attestent de sa profonde connaissance des développements de l'industrie aéronautique en Europe et ont fourni un avis éclairé sur la menace allemande dans les années 1930. La H6B numéro 10309 fut commandée par M. Ide et sa conception réalisée à sa demande, une idée de son prestige nous est fournie par le fait que sa commande a fait l'objet d'un article dans Vanity Fair en 1921 avec des photographies de la voiture achevée. Sous le titre « A French Car of American Design – A Note on Mr J.J. Ide's Remarkable Hispano-Suiza », l'article fait l'éloge du châssis comme la base parfaite pour le type de carrosserie que Mr. Ide a imaginée avec de judicieuses remarques : « Il arrive rarement, cependant, que le châssis se prête à cette construction, le radiateur devant habituellement être surélevé, sinon une surface voilée se dessine en dessous de la ligne d'articulation du capot ». « Comme on peut le voir à hauteur de vue du spectateur, la ligne nickelée horizontale le long de la carrosserie n'est pas interrompue par la roue de secours intégrée dans chacun des garde-boue ». « La petite bosse de la capote repliée mérite l'attention, comparée aux énormes masses qui défigurent parfois les créations américaines ». L'article s'attarde également sur les détails liés au confort des passagers : « Une attention particulière à été portée à l'aménagement de l'intérieur. Sous le tunnel de transmission se trouve une large cavité capitonnée formant un compartiment fermé à clé pour loger les panneaux latéraux et les baguettes de portière. Signalons ici que toutes les portes sont articulées à l'avant afin qu'il n'y ait pas de courant d'air qui s'engouffre par les rideaux qui s'ouvrent avec les portes ». « Un grand soin a été pris pour fournir des rangements appropriés pour les longs voyages. Les quatre portes sont dotées de vide-poches qui ferment à clé, celui de la porte avant droite étant prévu pour le petit outillage ». « Une grande boîte à outils divisée en trois compartiments et capitonnés pour éviter le bruit est aménagée sous les sièges avant, enfoncée dans le plancher ». « Une autre boîte, de la largeur du châssis, est placée sous le marchepied avant. Elle sert à loger la couverture de la capote lorsque celle-ci est érigée ».L'article conclut : « Nous sommes habitués à voir des carrosseries à façon américaine sur les meilleurs châssis européens. Il est très rare cependant, qu'un carrossier du continent, sur ses terres pourrait-on dire, daigne construire une carrosserie incorporant des idées américaines dans son dessin. Dans ce cas, pourtant, l'artisan n'a pas eu le choix en la matière et a tout simplement suivi les consignes de M. Ide avec un résultat particulièrement heureux ». « Peut-être la voiture de M. Ide influencera-t-elle les carrossiers européens à prendre en compte ses lignes simples et claires qu'ils ont négligées depuis tant d'années ». Il est difficile de savoir comment M. Ide a réussi à convaincre le carrossier Duvivier de Paris d'habiller la voiture, mais ses lignes fluides sont à la fois modernes pour l'époque et élégantes dans leur aspect dépouillé. De façon intéressante le même carrossier adopta un dessin similaire pour le Maharajah de Patiala, sur un châssis jumeau, 10308, une photo le montrant chassant avec cette voiture a survécu, sans qu'on sache si la voiture, elle, existe encore. Au dossier on trouvera quelques documents remarquables datant des premiers jours de la voiture, comprenant le dessin pour la carrosserie et des photos de la voiture neuve, des factures d'Hispano-Suiza pour l'entretien et des pièces et la police d'assurance au nom de M. Ide émanant de Frank Arthur au 378, rue Saint-Honoré, la facture pour le châssis roulant du garage Saint Didier qui l'a fourni et une copie du chèque et même une lettre du carrossier R. Duvivier confirmant sa réception ! On pense que M. Ide a gardé la voiture pendant deux ou trois ans et probablement lors de son retour aux États-Unis, puisque l'on sait qu'elle était en Amérique dès le début des années 1930. En 1932, l'Hispano était la propriété d'Hermann Oelrichs de Madison Avenue, à New York et aussi au Rhode Island, une copie d'immatriculation au Rhode Island à son nom figurant au dossier attestant qu'il la possédait encore en 1936. Les propriétaires suivants, s'il y en eut, ne sont pas connus, mais en 1973 elle était encore au Rhode Island et y était peut-être resteée pendant tout ce temps. Puis elle fut vendue par le fameux collectionneur George H. Waterman à un autre collectionneur réputé de la marque, B.
