Edward Bawden (1903-1989) Walton Castle, Somerset lithographic poster, 1936, condition A; not backed (Dimensions: 76cm x 114cm (30in x 45 in))(76cm x 114cm (30in x 45 in))This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside. Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was a designer, printer and illustrator. He trained at the Royal Collage of Art under Paul Nash. He was a war artist and afterwards worked on many book illustrations and for organisations such as Fortnum & Mason, the National Westminster Bank and London Transport. As well as posters, press advertisements and illustrations, he produced murals, wallpaper designs and textiles. He also did work for Wedgewood. His commission here for Shell features Walton Castle which is a 17th Century, Grade II listed castle set upon a hill in Clevedon, North Somerset. It was built on the site of an earlier Iron Age hill fort.
A LARGE WEDGEWOOD VASE, 19TH CENTURYof baluster form, featuring a scene of two maidens in white twisting and turning in fabric. one maiden looks past her shoulder with one bare leg outstretched and she holds a piece of cloth in her hands. the other maiden's back is turned and her arm is outstretched holding a bouquet of foliage. both surrounded by a gold cartouche, creating a continuous gold scroll motif. all against a mint green ground. impressed 3 VJ C 3014 under base; overall height: 55 cm (21 5/8in.) CONDITION In age-appropriate condition. Scattered dark spots on the maidens. Inspection under UV shows no apparent signs of restoration. Vase appears in excellent original condition. A quantity of blue and white transfer printed pottery to include mainly Wedgewood Ferrara pattern, coffee pot, pedestal bowl, etc (one shelf) . Large footed bowl badly cracked. Soup bowl and stand cracked. One egg cup damaged. One octagonal jug with handle broken and glued. One plate with two large pieces re glued to the rim.
