Lot 245

MACALLAN 10 YEAR OLD FINE OAKSingle malt. There are few distilleries in the world quite so revered as Macallan. Nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, the rich spirit that runs from their “curiously small stills”, and their penchant for Spanish Sherry casks have proven to be a match made in Heaven, delighting the tastebuds of whisky connoisseurs around the globe. With demand far outstripping supply, they embarked upon one of the most ambitious distillery upgrades of all time, investing £140 million in an ultra-modern still house and visitor centre that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, and is home to a whopping 36 stills capable of churning out around 15 million litres of spirit every year. Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.40% ABV / 70cl

Lot 246

HIGHLAND PARK 12 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Orkney’s Highland Park distillery is situated in the town of Kirkwall on the site of an illicit still thought to have been operated by Magnus Eunson, a smuggler, local butcher and former priest who was directly descended from Viking settlers. With that heritage, it’s fitting that today they frequently draw from Scandinavian mythology when it comes to naming their whiskies. The distillery is known for its signature style that utilises Orcadian peat in the malting process, resulting in a fragrant, heathery spirit that is most often left matured in Sherry wood.40% ABV / 70clSINGLETON OF DUFFTOWN SPEY CASCADESingle malt. One of the best-known single malt whisky brands in the world, Singleton, is not actually a distillery, but rather three distilleries: Glen Ord, Glendullan and Dufftown. Originally, each one catered to a specific global market based on its flavour profile, but these days they can each be found further afield. With spirit stills that are larger than its wash stills, Dufftown used to produce a heavier spirit described as “nutty and spicy”. However, more recently it has lengthened its fermentation time for a lighter, grassier flavour that better suits (parent company) Diageo’s blending requirements.40% ABV / 70cl

GLENFIDDICH 12 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Without Glenfiddich, Scotland might not enjoy the same thriving whisky scene it has today. Founded in 1886 by William Grant, and still family owned, Glenfiddich was one of the first distilleries to seriously market single malt whisky as a credible alternative to blends. This decision was prompted by a dispute with their grain supplier in 1963, leading to a scaling back in production of their Grant’s blend. By the late 1960s Glenfiddich single malt was a firm hit with the Jet Set, who were picking it up in their droves from the newly emerging Duty-Free market. That early prescience clearly paid off, as (despite strong competition from fellow Speyside giants Glenlivet and Macallan) Glenfiddich is consistently the best-selling single malt in the world, shifting over 1 million cases every year.40% ABV / 70clMONKEY SHOULDERBlended malt.Monkey Shoulder is a popular blended malt from the owners of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie.40% ABV / 70cl

Lot 26

SPRINGBANK 2001 VINTAGE BATCH 1Single malt. There are very few distilleries left in Scotland that have the capacity to carry out 100% of the whisky making process onsite, but Springbank can make that claim. Situated in Campbeltown (the former whisky capital of the world) the distillery produces three distinct styles of single malt: lightly peated Springbank, heavily peated Longrow, and triple distilled, unpeated Hazelburn.Despite being a relatively small distillery, Springbank has cultivated a global cult following, with older expressions such as their legendary Local Barley series commanding eye-watering sums at auction.Bottled: July 200955.3% ABV / 70clFill level in mid neck.

Lot 261

LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK AND LAPHROAIG SELECTSingle malts.Founded in 1815, and often considered to be the whisky equivalent of Marmite (in that you either love it or hate it), Laphroaig is a smoky, medicinal tasting whisky from the south coast of Islay. Clearly more people fall into the “love” category though, as Laphroaig is one of the top ten best selling single malts in the world. Just as well, then, that it is the second largest distillery on the island (after Caol Ila), capable of producing 3.4 million litres of spirit per annum. The distillery still retains its own malting floor, and although it only covers 20% of their requirements, it is instrumental in providing the creosote-y, phenolic character that defines the Laphroaig spirit.Select - 40% ABV / 70clQuarter Cask - 48% ABV / 70clFill levels in mid neck.

Lot 263

GLEN SCOTIA DOUBLE CASKSingle malt.Historically, Glen Scotia hasn’t enjoyed the same degree of success as its Campbeltown stablemates. However, recent investment from The Loch Lomond group has worked wonders in turning this around. A good chunk of this investment has gone into sourcing high quality casks, and the brand now boasts a rock-solid core range, topped off by an award winning 25-Year-Old.Did we mention that the distillery is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a former manager? Thankfully none of their whiskies seem to exhibit tasting notes of ectoplasm.46% ABV / 70clBLACKSTRAP COVE DOUBLE CASKSingle malt. This Scotch single malt has been martured in a combination of Bourbon and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. Although bottled under the name Gibraltar Distillery Co, the whisky is produced by the Loch Lomond group and is lightly peated, so it could well be the same liquid as the Glen Scotia.46% ABV / 70clThere is some minor damage to the Blackstrap Cove carton.

Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.Created by Macallan in the early 2000s, this series is meant to capture the character of the distillery over the decades, from the 1920s until the 1950s. Each 40% ABV / 50clPlease see additional images of cartons.

So much so, that at one point 28 other distilleries in the area adopted “Glenlivet” as a suffix to their own brand in order to piggyback on the reputation Glenlivet had built for itself. Although that practise has fallen by the wayside in recent years some independent bottlers still use it.The Glenlivet brand is now one of the most recognisable in the world, and despite the distillery undergoing an expansion and upgrade (beginning) in 2010, their iconic 12-Year-Old expression still had to be discontinued for a few years before production was able to catch up with demand.40% ABV / 70cl

Lot 27

BOWMORE 12 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Sat on the picturesque shore of Loch Indaal, Bowmore is a distillery steeped in mythology and legend, ranging from tales of Sea Dragons and Devils in churches to, er, seagulls. Making use of Islay’s abundant peat, Bowmore whisky can be smoky and briny, but it distinguishes itself from its contemporaries with notes of tropical fruit and Parma Violets. Most famous among whisky auction regulars are its outstanding “Black” releases. These 1964 vintage, sherry bombs were available for a snip when they made their debut in the early 1990s, but are now capable of commanding five figure sums at auction.40% ABV / 70clFill level in low neck.

Lot 274

GLENMORANGIE 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world. They were one of the first distilleries to experiment with cask finishing; the process of transferring spirit from one cask type to another in order to impart additional characteristics and flavours. To further this agenda of innovation, in September of 2021 Glenmorangie began production at their new “Lighthouse” facility, a futuristic R&D department protruding from the heart of their traditional distillery complex like a monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Off limits to the public, it is home to a “sensory lab” as well as two of Glenmorangie’s signature stills, each of which plays host to several classified modifications. Only time will tell what exciting innovations will filter down to the rest of the industry.40% ABV / 70clGLENFIDDICH 12 YEAR OLD SPECIAL RESERVESingle malt.Without Glenfiddich, Scotland might not enjoy the same thriving whisky scene it has today. Similarly unusual is its use of triple distillation to produce a purer spirit that’s light and mildly fruity.Situated just outside Clydebank, the distillery was lucky to survive the 1941 blitz relatively unscathed. Only one of its warehouses was damaged by a bomb blast, and another near miss provided a blast crater that later became the distillery’s picturesque pond.40% ABV / 70cl

Lot 286

CLYNELISH 12 YEAR OLD SPIRIT OF FREE EMBOSingle malt.Built in the late 1960s, as a replacement for the distillery we now refer to as Brora, Clynelish has produced whisky for the Johnnie Walker range of blends ever since. Capable of producing nearly 5 million litres of spirit annually, it is one of Scotland’s larger malt distilleries. But despite this, it isn’t exactly a household name, with a relatively small percentage of its output appearing in single malt form. Its core range begins and ends with a 14-Year-Old, occasionally supplemented with a few limited releases and a sporadically bottled double matured Distillers Edition. Thankfully, fans of the Highland distillery’s signature waxy style can experience a broader selection in the form of independent releases.40% ABV / 75clPlease see additional images.

Lot 290

BRUICHLADDICH MICRO PROVENANCE 1990 22 YEAR OLD REMY COINTREAU ACQUISITIONSingle malt. This rare Micro Provenance expression was bottled to celebrate the acquisition of Bruichladdich distillery by Remy Cointreau. BLACK BOWMORE 1964 FINAL EDITIONSingle malt. The final edition of Black Bowmore 1964 Finest Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled in 1995.The Bowmore distillery underwent an extensive upgrade in late 1963 to 1964 under new owners Stanley P Morrison. This included converting the stills from direct coal firing to indirect steam firing, and this bottling comes from the first distillation following the conversion. The spirit was filled into oloroso sherry casks and matured for 31 years below sea level in the distillery vaults, before bottling at 49% ABV in 1995. ARRAN 1998 ROBERT BURNS 250TH ANNIVERSARY EDITIONSingle malt.Still a relative youngster in whisky terms, Arran distillery began production in 1995. Thanks to a focus on sourcing quality casks, and its light, accessible spirit that ages well, Arran has proven extremely successful. So much so, that in 2017 they began construction of a second distillery on the other side of the island. Lot 4

CARDHU 12 YEAR OLD - 12 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Cardhu was the first distillery acquired by John Walker & Son in 1893 and has been linked to the brand ever since. Although it had appeared as a single malt as early as 1888, it wasn’t until nearly 100 years later that it was properly marketed as such. This proved especially popular in Spain and France, to the point where the distillery couldn’t meet the demand without eating into its blending stock. Their novel approach was to supplement it with whisky from other distilleries, calling it a “Pure Malt” instead. This sneaky tactic caused no end of consternation from the wider whisky industry, ultimately resulting in a tightening of Scotch Whisky regulations and the introduction of the “Blended malt” category.40% ABV / 70cl & 50cl

Lot 42

MACALLAN 10 YEAR OLD EDRINGTON EXPRESS MINIATURESingle malt. There are few distilleries in the world quite so revered as Macallan. Lot 45

GLENFARCLAS 1987 VINTAGE REFILL OLOROSO CASKSingle malt.Still independently owned, Glenfarclas has been operated by the Grant Family since 1865 when John Grant bought the distillery for the princely sum of £511.19s.0d. In today’s money that’s about £69,000, so still a bargain. The distillery’s microclimate ensures one of the lowest Angel’s Shares in Scotland, allowing Glenfarclas to release staggeringly old expressions that still boast eye watering ABVs, and their (almost) exclusive use of European oak Sherry Casks results in a whisky that’s resinous and rich in dried fruit notes. This expression was released for the French market.46% ABV / 70clFill level in mid neck.

Lot 47

LAPHROAIG 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Founded in 1815, and often considered to be the whisky equivalent of Marmite (in that you either love it or hate it), Laphroaig is a smoky, medicinal tasting whisky from the south coast of Islay. Just as well, then, that it is the second largest distillery on the island (after Caol Ila), capable of producing 3.4 million litres of spirit per annum. The distillery still retains its own malting floor, and although it only covers 20% of their requirements, it is instrumental in providing the creosote-y, phenolic character that defines the Laphroaig spirit. This is one of their older style 10 Year Olds.40% ABV / 70clFill level in mid neck
