Theatre.- Winstanley (William) The lives of the most famous English poets, or The honour of Parnassus; in a brief essay of the works and writings of above two hundred of them, first edition, engraved frontispiece with bust of the author, with the final blank, O3 small piece from lower blank corner, occasional water-staining (mostly at ends), some spotting, contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, preserving original backstrip (some loss at ends) with later gilt and red morocco label, [Wing W3065], rubbed and marked, 8vo, Printed by H. Clark for Samuel Manship, 1687.⁂ Rare in commerce. Winstanley (c.1628 - 1698), English poet, compiler of biographies, royalist, and proud Essex man. The present work includes Shakespeare, Beaumont & Fletcher, Spenser, and Chaucer. Provenance: James, Earl of Bute (engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown).
