The perennially popular Mk1 Mexico, something of a cult car, here in striking Sebring Red and restored for an avid Blue Oval enthusiast. It seems likely that Ford already had plans to produce a high performance Escort to fit in the range between the 1300GT and the Twin-Cam/RS1600, but their victory in the World Cup Rally finishing in Mexico provided an ideal platform to launch such a model. The engineers at the newly formed AVO (Advanced Vehicles Operations) quickly developed the 'Mexico', marrying the Type 49 bodyshell, as used in the Twin-Cam and RS1600, with the 1,600cc Kent 'crossflow' engine and 2000E gearbox. So effectively, the Mexico was basically a re-engined Twin-Cam/RS1600. The Mexico became AVO's most successful and numerous of the Rally Sport Escorts and had a number of advantages on the road in that it had excellent performance, was easy to maintain, relatively easy to insure and above all, it was great to drive, something which is still true today. The car presented here is a 1974 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico in 'oh-so-'70s' Sebring Red paintwork. This historic Fast Ford has the chassis number BFATPU00330, with the PU prefix confirming an AVO build date of June 1974. We are informed that the car still features its original Kent engine with number PU00330, adorned by its factory-spec airbox which is always a treat. The car was first registered on 4th October 1974, the delay between the two dates being attributed to the demand for the Mexico cooling-off once the RS2000 was launched in July 1973. With its seven former keepers no doubt having enjoyed the charms of this little Mexico between 1974 and 2009, its last owner acquired the Escort in October 2009. At this point, he embarked on a thorough professional restoration which was carefully documented, both with written notes and accompanying photographs. This diligent process resulted in the car we see offered here for sale, remaining in the same enthusiastic and knowledgeable ownership until only recently, when he sadly passed away. With only a nod to some personal touches, the clearer-to-see speedometer and period bullet-style wing mirrors, this Mexico still stands up very well and would be a pleasure to own for any aficionado of the Blue Oval. Iconic Auctioneers have sold similar era Mk1 RS2000s for in excess of £100,000, so this Mexico, with much money and time invested, offers a tempting opportunity to own one of Ford's most sought after classics.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 MEXICO Year: 1974 Chassis Number: BFATPU00330 Registration Number: GKE 28N Transmission: Manual Engine Number: PU00330 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 509

A beautifully prepared example of the earliest Morris Minor model currently racing, with Goodwood provenance and welcome anywhere. The ubiquitous Morris Minor arrived in September 1948 as the 918cc side-vale powered ‘Series MM’ and was replaced by a restyled car in September 1950. They have become known by Minor enthusiasts as the ‘Low Light’ and ‘High Light’ respectively.Originally supplied by W Watson and Co, Liverpool in July 1949 as a 'Low Light', this well known Goodwood participant is offered fresh to market by its fastidious owner after it being in his care for the past 12 years, during which time its long standing employment as an historic race car, some 30 years to date, has been continued and enjoyed to the maximum.Well known within the world of Historic Motorsport, SSK 888 is probably best know to the public through its exploits at the Goodwood Revival where it’s been invited five times and raced in the St Marys Trophy, in 2008 driven by the owner and Brian Redman, in 2014 shared with Tony Jardine, in 2017 and 2019 with Rauno Aaltonon and most recently our vendor shared the car with Richard (Dickie) Attwood in the 2021 St Mary's Trophy. Four outings in the Donington Historic yielded a seventh overall in 2019 and the car finished a splendid fourth overall in the 2022 Sopwith Cup at the Goodwood Members Meeting. However, whilst Goodwood has possibly been its pinnacle, it has also been a regular contender in HRDC Touring Greats, the HRDC Jack Sears Trophy and All Stars Series, BARC Oldies but Goldies, the Classic Saloon Car Championship and more besides and with the St Marys Trophy on the running order once again at this years Goodwood Revival there is the possibility of a further appearance at one of the most prestigious motorsport events ever conceived. The list of this venerable Minor's many Class Wins and podiums is too long to cover here and a substantial amount of further information about the car's decades of motor racing history is contained in the car’s history file which can be inspected at our Documents Desk at Race Retro or can be emailed to interested parties.Similarly, the car’s mechanical specification and developments over the years are listed on several pages and can be forwarded to potential buyers.Key Info;Car completely rebuilt in 2008 by IK Classics2017/2022 New full-race 1,293cc engine. It’s road-registered with a current V5C and Heritage Certificate so endless opportunities abound. Believed to be 'The Oldest Racing Morris Minor in the World', there is no reason why it can’t go on delighting the crowds for years to come.Specification Make: MORRIS Model: MORRIS MINOR LOW LIGHT HISTORIC RACE CAR Year: 1949 Chassis Number: SMM18550 Registration Number: SSK 888 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: SMM/18550 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: GreenClick here for more details and images
