Registration - AUJ 743LChassis No. - LD.13095DM.O.T. - June 2024Odometer - 93,500 This Triumph Stag has the desirable manual transmission with overdrive and has undergone a comprehensive restoration in recent years, transitioning from its previous white hue to the glorious Mimosa yellow, and covering engine, body, and chassis refurbishments. The engine received upgrades such as an enhanced coolant tank, radiator, and electric fan.The interior is believed to be mostly original, with sympathetic restoration undertaken where necessary. Recent maintenance of this well looked-after motor car includes the installation of a new battery and tuning up the engine, including balancing the carburetors and fitting a new choke cable by specialist Stagbay. In May 2023, new sill covers were added to safeguard the inner sills, with rear cruise lights replacing the original Stag emblems (though the originals are retained). These modifications were made with originality in mind and can be reverted without causing any permanent damage. Invoices for parts utilised during the restoration are included in the large history file, which features a substantial stack of invoices dating back to 1978. Supporting documentation includes old MOTs dating back to 1983, suggesting that the displayed mileage of just over 93,500 is highly credible, although this cannot be warranted. According to the vendor, the car starts, drives, and handles exceptionally well, emitting a particularly pleasing exhaust note. Offered with an MOT valid until June this year, this vibrant Stag stands ready for an exhilarating summer ahead and is offered at No Reserve. The British-built Stag was designed to compete with the established SL models from Mercedes-Benz. Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, it was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that saloon. The powerplant, however, was an all-new OHC V8 unit of 2997cc, fed by a pair of Zenith Stromberg carburettors. The Stag received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, customers encountered problems concerned the camshaft drive chains, cylinder heads and gaskets, water pumps and waterways of the new engine. Restorers have long since solved such maladies. Production ceased in 1977 after some 25,877 examples had been made – c.9,000 of which have survived in the UK. In summary: • Original UK-supplied Stag with manual overdrive transmission • Finished in Mimosa Yellow with a Black interior • The subject of a recent restoration, offered at No Reserve

India. Bourne and Shepherd Albumen print, 295mm x 215mm in card mount. Photograph showing Raguraj Singh, Maharaja of Rewa c1870s by Bourne and Shepherd. Bourne & Shepherd, founded in 1863, stood as an iconic Indian photographic studio, boasting the status of one of the world's oldest established photographic businesses. During its zenith, it reigned as the preeminent commercial entity in 19th- and early 20th-century India, boasting widespread agencies throughout the country, as well as outlets in London and Paris, along with a thriving mail-order service. However, a catastrophic fire in 1991 ravaged a significant portion of its photographic archives, leading to substantial financial setbacks. Coupled with legal disputes with the Indian government, which owned the studio building, and the escalating prominence of digital technology, the studio succumbed to closure in June 2016 after 176 years of continuous operation. Very good condition with some small foxing spots.
1930;s Motor Sport Sir Malcolm Campbell, Period photograph of Sir Malcolm Cambell sitting in a racecar, 1930's mounted on period album leaf, image 18cm x 13cm, text below reads der Weltrekordhalter - the world record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell: A Speed Pioneer Major Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE, will be forever remembered for his daring exploits on land and water. Born on March 11, 1885, Campbell's legacy extends far beyond his lifetime, shaping the very fabric of speed records and inspiring generations of enthusiasts worldwide. Famously associated with the iconic Blue Bird vehicles, Campbell's quest for speed was relentless. His achievements were not only personal triumphs but also a testament to the spirit of human ingenuity and perseverance. In 1924, Campbell etched his name in the record books by breaking the land speed record for the first time. Roaring across Pendine Sands near Carmarthen Bay in a 350HP V12 Sunbeam, he reached an astonishing 146.16 mph (235.22 km/h). Today, the very car he piloted proudly sits on display at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, a testament to his pioneering spirit. But Campbell's thirst for speed was insatiable. Between 1924 and 1935, he shattered nine land speed records, leaving a trail of dust and awe in his wake. Three of these triumphs were achieved at Pendine Sands, while five were conquered at Daytona Beach, each victory pushing the boundaries of what was deemed possible. In 1925, Campbell further solidified his reputation by setting a new lap record of 100 mph (160.93 km/h) at Brooklands, showcasing his versatility and mastery behind the wheel of a streamlined Chrysler Six. However, it was on February 4, 1927, that Campbell reached the zenith of his career. At Pendine Sands, he obliterated previous records, achieving speeds of 174.883 mph (281.447 km/h) in the Napier-Campbell Blue Bird, setting both the Flying Kilometre and Flying Mile records. Yet, perhaps his crowning achievement came on September 3, 1935, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Here, Campbell made history by becoming the first person to drive an automobile over 300 mph, averaging a mind-boggling 301.337 mph (484.955 km/h) in two passes. His feat remains a testament to human courage and technological innovation. Tragically, Campbell's remarkable journey came to an end in 1948, when he succumbed to a series of strokes in Reigate, Surrey, at the age of 63. His passing marked the end of an era, yet his legacy endures as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.

Attributed to Nicholas Matthew Condy (British, 1818-1851)The celebrated 1000-Guinea Match between Lord Belfast's Brig Waterwich and Mr Talbot's Schooner Galatea in September 1834 oil on panel30.1 x 43.5cm (11 7/8 x 17 1/8in).Footnotes:The Earl of Belfast, later 3rd Marquess of Donegall, was one of the most colourful personalities in the first decade of British competitive yacht racing. After winning a particularly memorable match in 1831, he famously declared 'I have proved to the world that I possess the fastest cutter afloat; I will now see what I can do with a square rigger.' Thus were laid the foundations of his flirtations with two square-rigged yachts, the first of which was an outstanding beauty and the second so impressive a sailor that she was coveted by no less an institution that the Royal Navy at the very zenith of its power and prestige. The first of Lord Belfast's two square-riggers was his little brigantine Emily but the principle legacy of Lord Belfast's 1831 pledge to 'see what he could do with a square rigger' was the creation of the celebrated Waterwich and, as Ian Dear, the yachting historian has stated, 'Being the man he was, Lord Belfast did not satisfy himself with any ordinary square-rigger. Instead, he decided to build a ten-gun brig which would out sail the Navy's latest design of this type.'Built by White's at Cowes, the 34-ton Waterwich measured 901/2 feet in length with a 291/2 foot beam and was completed in 1832. Rigged as a brig but designed with the lines of racing thoroughbred, Waterwich joined the Royal Navy's experimental squadron off Cork that autumn for her trials and outsailed everything the navy could field against her. So successful was she that the press demanded she be ought for the fleet but the Admiralty stubbornly refused to take up the challenge. The immediate result was that Waterwich spent most of 1833 outsailing every warship which entered the Solent whilst the Admirality procrastinated and Lord Belfast's patience became exhausted. At the start of the 1834 season, Belfast had her interior refitted as a yacht an in, September, challenged Mr C.R.M Talbot to a race that would clinch Waterwich's reputation. The race, arguably the first ocean contest anywhere in the world and with a prize of 1,000 guineas, was to be over a 224-mile course from the Nab to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back. Talbot's boat, the 190-schooner Galatea got away well and rounded the lighthouse ahead of her rival bit on the return leg, Waterwich overhauled her and won by twenty-five minutes. It was a remarkable victory for a full bodied rig with a square rig and the Admiralty made an instant decision they were not to regret. Bought by the Royal Navy in October 1834, HMS Waterwich retained her name in a fleet and fleet and proved a model of her kind until sold in retirement in 1861.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
The Important Regiomontanus/Cardinal Bessarion Astrolabe, dated 1462, CCA 640, A brass European astrolabe inscribed on the back plate 'SVB DIVI BESSARIONIS DE CARDINE DICTI/PRAESIDIO ROMAE SVRGO IOANNIS OPVS 1462' (Under the protection of the divine Bessarion on whom all can be said to depend I arise [appear/come forth] in Rome the work of John 1462). Rete The restrained tracery, composed of flat curves symmetrically disposed around a semi-quatrefoil placed beneath the ecliptic circle, carries lightly curved pointers arising from open ring bases for thirty named stars. The Capricorn ring ends in two leaf-forms worked in relief; there is no Capricorn pointer. On the face, the limb carries only a degree scale, divided to single degrees by groups of five, and numbered every ten. At an indeterminable later date, perhaps during the 16th century, the outer edge was engraved with numbers for the hours. The mater is provided by a single flat-filed plate probably from a hammered sheet derived from a cast slab. It is blank on both faces although traces of some casting fissures can be seen. Throne This is composed of a triangle formed from three roundels each decorated on the face with five concave circles set around a central boss to give a petal of almost clover-like appearance. On the back the two lower roundels carry six-pointed stars while the upper roundel has petal decoration similar to that on the front. The triangle is supported by scrolled-over leaf-heads, similar to those that terminate the Capricorn circle. A shackle with a cross-shaped head straddles the upper roundel and carries a swivel ring. Back On the edge, the limb is engraved with a degree scale in four quadrants 90-0-90-0-90° to allow readings to be taken in both altitude and zenith distance. Each quadrant is divided to 1° and numbered by groups of 10°. The reading direction for the numerals, i.e. from the outer edge towards the centre or from the centre towards the edge, is reversed in each quadrant. Within this is a zodiacal calendar (0° Aries = 10.75 March), the months divided into individual days with the idiosyncrasy that the first two letters of the name of each sign and each month are placed at the end of their division rather than at the beginning thus, for the signs, replacing 30, and for the months replacing 28, 30, or 31. For February however the final 3-day space was too small leading 'FE' to be engraved in the previous 5-day space. A final scale at the centre, concentric with all the others, is in fact two. The upper semi-circle is divided to degrees 0-90-0; the lower semi-circle is divided 0-12-0 by single divisions numbered every two, and thus serves as a shadow square for height and distance operations. Inset in the cavity produced by the limb being proud of the mater, and free to rotate, is a disc engraved across its centre with an orthographic projection known as an organum Ptolemei (a device for reckoning time in equal hours from the solar altitude), sustained by a clothed winged figure (? an archangel), with the inscription explaining the origin of the instrument below. Plates The three plates are drawn for 39°/54° 42°/51° 45°/48° with that for 42° being specifically marked for the latitude of Rome. That they are engraved in a running series of 3° divisions on the separate plates rather than recto/verso (ie 39°/42°) is relatively unusual. Each plate has an upper, unperforated, locating lug, is engraved with the usual almucantars (circles of equal altitudes above the horizon) and azimuths at 5° intervals, the tropics, the crepuscular line, and lines for the unequal hours numbered 1-12 beneath. The 48° plate is additionally engraved with lines for the astrological houses of the heavens. Rule The double-arm rule is engraved with a declination scale allowing the angular distance of a celestial object from the celestial equator to be determined. Alidade horse and pin None of these are likely to be original to the instrument. The plain cast alidade has lost the vanes once hinged to its extremities and has been cut down to coincide with the edge of the instrument, thus losing it points. The chemical composition of its brass however, as that of the pin, is similar to that of the rete. Turner (p. 2) in 1989, already noted that the wedge (horse) had been lost and been fitted with a replacement. ICC N° 640.
