Rectangular in form, the pendant is finely carved and incised with a magpie beneath a thick, leafy bamboo stalk and a radiating sun disk on the reverse. The pendant is suspended by an old cord with a single carnelian bead beneath a celadon jade ring. The transparent, sky-blue stone has light icy inclusions.Provenance: From a private collection in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Condition: Good condition with some wear, small nicks, light surface scratches. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairlines. The base with a mark in the form of a magpie carrying a prunus branch in its beak.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Jonathan Broido (1941-2008), who was a professor of mathematics and philosophy as well as a passionate collector of Chinese art and archaic Turkoman weavings, known for his expertise and scholarly approach. A JADE ‘BIRD’ PENDANT, LATE SHANG TO WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 商末至西周鳥形玉飾Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 11th-8th century BC. The thick flattened plaque finely carved in the form of a recumbent bird in profile, detailed with incised feathers, sharp beak with pierced aperture for suspension, and round eyes. Opaque stone of a mottled greenish-brown tone with russet veins.Provenance: Collection of Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) and thence by descent to his widow Irene Beasley. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. He died in 1939 and his collection was stored with the British Museum collections during the war, which was fortunate, as the Cranmore Museum was destroyed by bombing. After the war, substantial portions of the collection were passed to the British Museum, the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the University of Cambridge, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Merseyside County Museum. Other pieces, such as the present lot, were sold by his widow and, after her death in 1974, by their daughters. Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964) was a contributor to the Cranmore Museum and became good friends with Harry Beasley. Of flattened form, finely carved in openwork on both sides as a dragon shown in profile, intertwined with a phoenix, the body issuing a further bird head. The surface decorated with dots and comma scrolls, some of which are interconnected. The smooth, superbly polished, translucent stone is of a fine yellow tone with pale brown shadings.Provenance: Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. One side with an old collection label. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France’s post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976).Condition: Very good condition with only minor old wear. A GREEN JADE ‘BIRD’ PENDANT FRAGMENT, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 西周鳥形玉珮Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1100-1000 BC. The flat stone carved in the form of a stylized bird, each side with grooves forming the wings and tail. The opaque jade of a grayish-green color with areas of white calcification.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. E.3.21A-H. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou’s years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou’s drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China’s rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a ‘must see’ destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China’s glorious history. Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Old wear, weathering and erosion, nibbling, some chips and losses. It has been theorized that they were once made as adornments and supports for elaborate lacquer vessels imitating the designs of ritual bronzes (see image section). None of these complete vessels have ever been found. This original intended use eventually fell out of fashion with the repurposing of these archaic examples for bodily adornment. The fur is well detailed with fine incision work and there are several pierced sections between the cats’ bodies for suspension as a pendant. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of a fine and pure white hue with scattered icy inclusions.Inscriptions: To one side, the poem ‘On Seeing the Snow Peak of Zhongnan’ by Zu Yong: ‘See how Zhongnan Mountain soars / With its white top over floating clouds / And a warm sky opening at the snow-line / While the town in the valley grows colder and colder.’The other side with the poem ‘Lu Zhai’ by Wang Wei (translation by Soame Jenyns, 1944): ‘An empty hill, and no one in sight / But I hear the echo of voices / The slanting sun at evening penetrates the deep woods / And shines reflected on the blue lichens.’Provenance: UK trade. He attained a jinshi degree in the imperial examination in 724, but left the capital to live a pastoral life, and composed his most famous poems on nature. Wang Wei (699-759) was a Chinese musician, painter, poet, and politician. He is regarded as one of the most famous men of arts and letters of his era. Many of his poems survive and 29 of them are included in the 18th century anthology ‘Three Hundred Tang Poems’. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France’s post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938, they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. The slightly convex ring is neatly incised to both sides with two line borders enclosing six evenly spaced interlocking-scroll designs. The translucent stone is of a grayish-white tone.Provenance: Collection of Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) and thence by descent to his widow Irene Beasley. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. Joan and Ted Dorf (1926-2020) were collectors of snuff bottles for over fifty years, in a lifelong passion that paralleled the deep love they felt for each other during their 67 years of marriage. Ted served as a director on the board of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society (ICSBS) between 2006 and 2012, and was also its vice president from 2009 to 2011. Despite a flourishing career in radio broadcasting, he always found time for collecting and co-chaired ICSBS conventions in Washington, D.C., and Palm Beach, Florida. This bottle is one of a distinctive group dated to the mid-Qing period that is made of pure white nephrite using the natural russet-brown skin of the pebble as part of the decoration. The raw material used for the present bottle was cut from a fairly large boulder or pebble, indicated by the slight curving of the russet skin which is imposed by the natural shape of the boulder. The powerful abstract design that results from the combination of a pure white pebble with its own russet skin remains popular among connoisseurs.The present bottle, however, is an extremely rare example because one of the narrow sides is delightfully carved with two monkeys clinging to rocks. Each baluster body is distinctively four-lobed and rises from a splayed foot to a waisted neck surmounted by a trumpet mouth with an everted lip in gilt-copper. Decorated around the exterior with bands of lotus blooms borne on meandering leafy scrolls between bats, ruyi and stylized lappet bands, all reserved on a deep turquoise ground. The recessed gilt copper base neatly incised with a five-character mark Qianlong nianzhi ze and of the period. (2)Provenance: From the collection of J. J. Lally, New York, USA. To each box, a collector’s label, ‘Lally & Co. New York’ with handwritten inventory number ‘4289.’ James J. Lally was a renowned antique dealer and connoisseur, recognized as one of the greatest scholar-dealers of Chinese art, who has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University, Lally joined Sotheby’s where he held many positions within the Chinese art department. In 1970 he served as the director of Chinese works of art at Sotheby’s in New York and Hong Kong, and by 1983 was named president of Sotheby’s in North America. In 1986, he founded his namesake gallery, J. J. Lally & Co., at 41 East 57th Street in New York - just a few blocks away from the MoMA, to provide advisory services for keen collectors. Lally fondly recalls the moment, not long after he opened his gallery, when a young man walked through the door with a Shang Dynasty gong-a bronze vessel shaped like a gravy boat-decorated with a dragon and tiger and in beautiful condition. It was, Lally described, “one of the most important objects I ever had in my hands.” The young man said he had inherited it from his father and was not really interested in Chinese art himself. He wanted to buy a sailboat and wondered if the gong was valuable enough to pay for that. “I was very happy to tell him that it was valuable enough to buy two sailboats,” Lally noted. The gallery helped to establish New York as a major center of commerce for Chinese art and allowed Lally to concentrate on his own specific interests, particularly early ceramics, ritual bronze vessels, archaic jade carvings and sculpture. Lally brought a learned approach to his work, publishing detailed, scholarly catalog that have remained important reference guides within the field. This meticulous approach continued when he produced his own exhibitions and catalog. Giuseppe Eskenazi, dubbed the “Godfather of Chinese Antiques,” and one of the world’s most esteemed Chinese art dealers, also spoke highly of Lally for his achievements in the industry, alongside William Chak from Hong Kong, and the Marchant family from London. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. He died in 1939 and his collection was stored with the British Museum collections during the war, which was fortunate as the Cranmore Museum was destroyed by bombing. After the war substantial portions of the collection were passed to the British Museum, the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the University of Cambridge, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Merseyside County Museum. Other pieces, such as the present lot, were sold by his widow and, after her death in 1974, by their daughters. (2)Marriage bowls are so named because of their auspicious imagery symbolizing a long and happy marriage with abundant offspring to carry on the family line, and thus were often presented as betrothal or wedding gifts. In this case, the imagery is provided by the pair of fish and the lotus flowers as well as the ruyi form.Chicken bone is a term for a rare and highly coveted nephrite jade of an opaque creamy beige color, often with extensive dark veining, which was particularly valued between the later Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is also sometimes said to be ‘burnt jade’ which has an opaque chalky appearance, usually with minute cracks all over the surface. It is known that nephrite - when heated to about 1000 degrees Celsius in a dry atmosphere - breaks down into diopside, enstatite (a magnesium silicate) and some quartz. In an experiment in the Freer Gallery Laboratory, samples of blue-green and white nephrite were submitted to temperatures up to 1025 degrees Celsius and both altered to an opaque chalky beige color with no change in the shape of the piece or the decoration of the surface. The chief mineral which resulted was diopside, and several nephrite jades in the Freer which appear to have been burnt also give a diopside x-ray diffraction pattern. Jadeite when heated in a similar manner behaves quite differently: it fuses to a glassy material, the surface smoothens out, and if the object is small enough it bends out of shape. The specific chicken bone color pattern of the present bowl may have been produced either by nature, or by deliberately heating the nephrite in a workshop, or by accidental exposure to fire. Beads like the one in this lot were worn along with headgear, knee decorations, elaborate necklaces, and other body ornaments all made primarily from jade. Dr. Elizabeth Childs-Johnson dubs these cultures a part of the ‘Jade Age,’ a period during which an abundance of jade objects accompanied the elite burials for the first time. Of flattened form and boldly carved in openwork to depict a sinuous dragon, its body finely decorated with partly interlocking C-scrolls, the long curved horn and curling tail neatly incised, the mouth pierced with a small aperture. The finely polished, translucent jade of a pale gray tone with a black patch, icy inclusions, and russet veins.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. T.7.6. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou’s years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou’s drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China’s rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968, he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the museum became a ‘must see’ destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China’s glorious history. The mouth, open to show the fangs, is topped by whiskers filled with striations, also used to mark the tufts of hair behind the head; the snout is upturned and terminates in a curl, while the slanting eye is topped by a thick line standing for the eyebrow. The elephant is finely detailed, emphasizing the wrinkly texture of its skin and paying close attention to the vessel filled with auspicious fruit, which is pierced through the center for suspension. The partly translucent stone is of a pale grayish-green tone with distinct russet and dark-gray shadings as well as cloudy inclusions and dark veins. Thomas ‘Gene’ Worrell (1919-2006) was a newspaper owner and art collector based in Charlottesville, Virginia. During his youth, Worrell attended college, completing a degree at the George Washington School of Law, and worked for the FBI during World War II as a special agent. In 1949, he began a career as a newspaperman and, with his wife, founded The Virginia Tennessean in Bristol. This marked the beginning of Worrell Newspapers, Inc., which became one of the largest chains of small dailies in the United States. The office of the Worrell Investment Company was home to The Worrell Collection, where the present lot was exhibited until 2022. The only collection of its magnitude in the country, it included sculpture, paintings, and antique Chinese jades. The translucent stone of a gray tone with deep red and dark speckled inclusions.Provenance: From the personal collection of J. J. Lally, New York, USA. With two labels from J. J. Lally, each inscribed with the number ‘4378’. James J. Lally is a renowned antique dealer and expert, recognized as one of the greatest scholar-dealers of Chinese art, who has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University, Lally joined Sotheby’s where he held many positions within the Chinese art department. In 1970 he served as the director of Chinese works of art at Sotheby’s in New York and Hong Kong, and by 1983 was named president of Sotheby’s in North America. In 1986 he founded his namesake gallery, J. J. Lally & Co., at 41 East 57th Street in New York – just a few blocks away from the MoMA, to provide advisory services for keen collectors. Lally fondly recalls the moment, not long after he opened his gallery, when a young man walked through the door with a Shang Dynasty gong—a bronze vessel shaped like a gravy boat—decorated with a dragon and tiger and in beautiful condition. It was, Lally described, “one of the most important objects I ever had in my hands.” The young man said he had inherited it from his father and was not really interested in Chinese art himself. He wanted to buy a sailboat and wondered if the gong was valuable enough to pay for that. “I was very happy to tell him that it was valuable enough to buy two sailboats,” Lally noted. The gallery helped to establish New York as a major center of commerce for Chinese art and allowed Lally to concentrate on his own specific interests, particularly early ceramics, ritual bronze vessels, archaic jade carvings and sculpture. Lally brought a learned approach to his work, publishing detailed, scholarly catalogs that have remained important reference guides within the field. This meticulous approach continued when he produced his own exhibitions and catalogs. Giuseppe Eskenazi, dubbed the “Godfather of Chinese Antiques,” and one of the world’s most esteemed Chinese art dealers, also spoke highly of Lally for his achievements in the industry, alongside William Chak from Hong Kong, and the Marchant family from London. The symbolism is perhaps more intriguingly expressed, however, and certainly the sculptural possibilities greater, if the two fish form separate bottles, as in the present lot. The motif of the twin fish is symbolic for a happy marriage. The connection comes from the thousands of eggs which fish lay, emblematic of fecundity. This same motif appears on marriage bowls as well as marriage vases, but it is extremely rare among snuff bottles. The pendant pierced vertically and carved in the form of a silkworm, incised at one end with its head, detailed with large rounded eyes and slightly open mouth, the body with stylized ‘comma-scrolls’. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon tone with few dark inclusions and patches of opaque creamy-white calcification.Provenance: Collection of Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) and thence by descent to his widow Irene Beasley. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. He died in 1939 and his collection was stored with the British Museum collections during the war, which was fortunate, as the Cranmore Museum was destroyed by bombing. After the war, substantial portions of the collection were passed to the British Museum, the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the University of Cambridge, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Merseyside County Museum. Other pieces, such as the present lot, were sold by his widow and, after her death in 1974, by their daughters. Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964) was a contributor to the Cranmore Museum and became good friends with Harry Beasley. Shortly after Harry Beasley’s death, he acquired a number of objects from Irene Beasley, including the present lot. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, minor nibbling, small chips, some of which have smoothened over time, signs of weathering and erosion. All three jade plaques with a fine polish overall.Provenance: From the collection of Gurli and Valter Justusson, Sweden. Gurli (1918-2000) and Valter Justusson (1918-2009) were two folk art dealers who lived in SimlÃ¥ngsdalen just outside Halmstad on the west side of Sweden. Of rectangular form, finely carved in low relief with a spotted stag standing foursquare with its head turned back amid rockwork beneath a leafy pine tree as a bat flies by. The word ‘bat’ shares a similar sound as the words for ‘blessings’ and ‘riches’, making the image of the bat one of the most popular rebuses used in Chinese symbolism. The bat is often depicted upside down in Chinese art, owing to the word for ‘upside down’ being a pun on the word ‘arrived’, thus an upside-down bat means ‘blessings have arrived.’ The deer is a pun for ‘emolument’ or ‘salary,’ and symbolizes Luxing, the God of Rank and Emolument. His name is also a homophonic pun with ‘road’ and ‘six.’ The deer is also a symbol of longevity, and as the only animal with the ability to search out the fungus of immortality, quite often the deer is depicted with the fungus in its mouth. In Taoist mythology, the deer is an animal who accompanies Shoulao, the God of Longevity, and Magu, the Goddess of Longevity. A PALE CELADON ‘FISH’ PENDANT, LATE SHANG TO EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 商末至西周初年青白玉魚形佩飾Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 12th-10th century BC. The thick pendant is of curved shape and finely carved as a fish with subtle incision work at the back and neck as well as large round eyes. The translucent stone has a good polish and is of a pale celadon tone with dark specks and opaque areas of beige and white calcification. One small hole for suspension.Provenance: Collection of Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) and thence by descent to his widow Irene Beasley. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. He died in 1939 and his collection was stored with the British Museum collections during the war, which was fortunate, as the Cranmore Museum was destroyed by bombing. After the war, substantial portions of the collection were passed to the British Museum, the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the University of Cambridge, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Merseyside County Museum. Other pieces, such as the present lot, were sold by his widow and, after her death in 1974, by their daughters. Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964) was a contributor to the Cranmore Museum and became good friends with Harry Beasley. China, Warring States period, 5th-3rd century BCThe flat plaque is finely carved on one end in the form of a dragon depicted with circular eyes, a snout-like nose, interlinking with a phoenix terminating with its head carved to the other end. Their body is decorated throughout with comma spirals as well as two small birds and terminates to the lower end with a further dragon head. The phoenix’ beak is lowered toward a large silkworm.The translucent stone is of an even white tone with veins and patches of russet as well as black speckles and icy inclusions.Many variations exist of this type of dragon pendant. However, the current example is noted for its fine material, lustrous polish, and large size. It also has very attractive coloration around the edges. The quite thick yet translucent blade is elegantly shaped and of rectangular form, flaring slightly toward the sharp beveled edge, pierced from the front side with a hafting hole. The jade is of a fine white tone with yellow and russet shadings as well as cloudy inclusions, that look like lambent flames when held against the sunlight (see detail image).Provenance: Galerie Beer, Brussels, 20 June 1951 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France’s post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976).Condition: Good condition with wear, minor signs of weathering and erosions, minor chips and losses to the edges. A copy of this report accompanies this lot.The present lot is a complete set of jade sword fittings, comprising a pommel (shou) of circular form, a sword guard (ge), a scabbard chape (bi) of trapezoidal form and a scabbard slide (zhi).Each of the four pieces in the set is decorated with a pair of dragons. A taotie-type mask is also carved in low relief on the backs of the guard and the chape. The underside of the pommel is incised with small interconnected scrolls in relief around a stylized four-petal flower. Well carved in the form of a carp with short fins on its back and sides and neatly incised scales, its gaping mouth forming the rim of the bottle. The carp is being transformed into a dragon, clearly visible from the pair of horns which have sprouted from the carp’s head. The translucent stone is of a grayish-white hue with black and dark brown patches and veins as well as icy inclusions.Provenance: Collection of Mei Lin. Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd.. From September 2021 to January 2022, the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong held a long-anticipated exhibition titled Reflected Beauty: Chinese Reverse Glass Paintings from the Mei Lin Collection. The Mei Lin Collection was acquired in East Asia between 1968 and 2012 and is one of the world's most important collections of Chinese reverse glass paintings from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Parts of the collection have been shown at the City Museum of Augsburg, Germany, at the Swiss Glass Museum in Romont, Switzerland, and are on show in Germany at the Landesmuseum Hannover until 16 April 2023 and the Museum Werdenfels in Garmisch-Partenkirchen until 31 March 2023. According to legend these carp would leap the Longmen Falls, an extremely arduous task, and upon successful completion the fish would be transformed into a dragon. A bottle embodying this symbolism would possibly be given by the Emperor to the most successful candidates.
