Machen (Arthur) Ornaments in Jade, typescript, 47pp., signed presentation inscription from the author "for F[ytton] A[rmstrong]" (John Gawsworth) to upper wrapper (now detached), "Torture" signed by the author at head and with several editorial corrections, pencil note by Gawsworth "suppressed for England" to head of "The Idealist", with two additional ?proof pages for "The Rose Garden" with correction in the author's hand, all bound together with split pin butterfly clip to upper corner, slight browning, light surface creasing, preserved in custom chemise and slip-case, 4to, [1930s].*** A presentation copy of this short story collection, likely gifted by Machen to Gawsworth as part of the latter's attempt to publish the collection in the UK. The pages are largely carbon copies except for the story "Torture" which appears to be a working draft.Gawsworth has dated the upper wrapper "Amersham 16/xi/35" and written a longer note that provides some context: "Typed versions of the stories contained in "Ornaments in Jade" prepared for an English Edition. No English Edition was printed, however, but all the stories (excepting 'The Idealist', considered obscene) were printed in 'The Cosy Room'." The Cosy Room was a collection of Machen's stories curated by Gawsworth and published in 1936.

Composed of two rectangular plates carved on both sides, with meticulous relief details showing a beautiful traditional landscape, with rugged mountains, small trees, stylised herons and small characters engaged in various activities. Both jade pieces are set in a custom-made wooden frame of reddish and orange colours, elaborately decorated with archaic, openwork and relief patterns. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later. A reddish-ochre-colour jade figure depicting the image of a reclining ram. The animal is depicted in great detail, with its body curled around a circular base. The twisted horns stand out on the head, which leans to the right. The open eyes and closed mouth have a serene expression. The slender legs ending in sharp hooves are curled up and arranged under its own body. A delicate, sinuous branch emerges from the base, and slips into the animal's mouth, as if it were feeding. On the base, fine engraved details are arranged in a succession of concentric circles. A magnificent white jade seal carved in one piece, with subtle gold and reddish flecks. On the upper part of the seal is a free-standing figure of a dragon, depicted in a menacing pose, with muscular legs flexed and resting on three sharp claws. The expression is intense, with wide-open eyes and closed jaws beneath which is a long beard. Crowning the head are short, pointed ears and imposing antlers.
