A Chinese Carved Pale Celadon Jade Carving "Washing the Sacred Elephant", 18th/19th century, the recumbent elephant with two attendants, one on its back, the other standing by its left ear holding a vase 7.5cm long, 4cm highProvenance: With Spink & Son Ltd, London, 17.11.49, £37 10/-, and subsequently sold in Tennants Spring Fine Art Sale, 28 March 2014, lot 159. The Spink's receipt describes the piece as "Translucent pale celadon pale jade carving of the Washing of the Sacred Elephant of the famous sage known as the Great Master Samantabhadra, Ch'ien-Lung 1736-1795AD" The standing boy with a crack on his left ankle and in the area of his right knee, the figure has never been detached and these may be natural inclusions of the stone. Another such inclusion appears at the rear right quadrant of the animal and into the mounted figure.
