Dutch School (18th Century) A Panoramic Valley Landscape with Winemakers unsigned; attributed to Thomas van Apshoven (Dutch, 1622-1664/7) on a presentation plaque oil on copper 17.8 x 22.0 cm (7 x 8 11/16 in). framed 27.5 x 31.5 x 4.0 cm (10 13/16 x 12 7/16 x 1 9/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. The copper support of the present work and its broad, almost impressionistic brushstrokes suggest that it may have been created by a dozijnschilder. Dozijnschilders were artists in 17th- and 18th-century Antwerp who produced popular works imitating the style of more well-known artists. These works were intended for the lower end of the domestic and foreign art market. Such artists often worked in large workshops and rarely signed their works, making it difficult to determine an attribution for works such as the present painting. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). RKD scholars suggest that the present work should be attributed to an 18th-century Antwerp dozijnschilder.
