After Aelbert Cuyp (Dutch, 1620-1691) Skating on the Maas in Late Winter with the Ruins of Huis Te Merwerde unsigned oil on panel 64.0 x 89.0 cm (25 3/16 x 35 1/16 in). framed 92.5 x 115.0 x 4.5 cm (36 3/16 x 45 5/16 x 1 13/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. The original work is now in the private collection of the Earl of Yarborough. A similar 18th- or 19th-century copy is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. 507-1870). In the 18th and 19th centuries, Cuyp's landscapes gained popularity particularly among the wealthy in Britain. More of Cuyp's works today are found in Britain than anywhere else. He was a favorite not only of collectors, but also of painters such as J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Gainsborough. As Cuyp became increasingly popular, reproductions of his works began to proliferate (ex. those reproduced in John Boydell's 1769 volume of prints etched after old master paintings [Boydell, John, ed. A Collection of Prints, Engraved after the Most Capital Paintings in England, London, 1769]). This work, as well as the one in the V&A, was likely painted near the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century to accommodate the rise in popularity of Cuyp's landscapes.
